A single plastic rose, its petals finely furred with grey, the stem and leaves now almost white from long days in the sun. Two flies – both shrivelled – only keep their shape because there is no breeze to stir them, shatter them to dust. She lies upon the broken bed, her planes and hollows, gentle curves, are picked out by the slanting sunlight gleaming on the smooth, pale surface of her naked bones. (Inside her skull the paper shell remains of where a wasp built . . . delicate intricate complex unknowing.)

there is a shadow that shifts at the back of the vault, silent as guilt, dark as memory, stuck in the throat of the limestone sarcophagus. dust falls as the cemetery plot starts to heave — ripples of gravel sent skipping in waves of distress till at last with a shuddering spasm the wrought-iron gates are sprung open, their padlock propelled between lichen-stained headstones, and I am spat out from the tomb — hawked and spat from a rest that proved far from eternal.

request stop, no shelter, just a sign atop a pole; rain-slashed crescent, nondescript grey concrete buildings with blind windows. short queue, each person curled into itself, cold, wet, unwilling though to give or to take comfort from the others. I was at its head. how long had we been waiting? hard to say, though we had watched at least five buses pass, all empty, but not even slowing as we tried to flag them down. finally I’d had enough, so as the sixth bus sped toward us I stepped off the kerb and stood right in its path; it skidded to within an inch of me. swiftly then I forced the door and seized the gaping driver, threw him out, and took his place. and now it’s been at least a week that I’ve been steering this thing round the rainy streets, hoping against hope that out of all the huddled queues I pass there steps one brave impatient soul to wrest the wheel from my unwilling grasp and set me free to stand and wait again.
