#HotBin
A little bruised, a little forgotten, but still full of goodness.

These quinces spent the last few weeks under the tree providing food and shelter for the micro-ecosystem below. Today they start their next chapter in the compost.

Thanks Jo, I am SO into it atm! Both the composting and the writing do something satisfying to my brain. Hope all well with you. And, yes, the hotbin often craves some bulking agent.

Composting is a good analogy for the percolating and nutrient leeching of the whole research and writing process and thinking about other things while tending the hotbin is something that I find soothing. Bigger systems at play. Gifts perspectives on the human world. The worms know the secret 🤘

They compost hilariously though because the seeds are so desperate to germinate that my hotbin becomes alive. 😂

Get a hotbin or make your own. Keep it hot inside and it'll kill weed seeds.

Protect it again rats though.

I loved stuffing things in there and reading the temperatures. 'Til the rat nibbled the bottom. I'm fixing it up, starting again. I produce 100s of litres of compost a year.

Dug out the surface area and put some of my highly nutritious hotbin compost down to give the violets a good start

Lunch. Fridge scrap stir fry. Couldn’t eat it all so I’m feeding it to the hotbin

Takes a while to get the mix right, fresh grass mixed in with other stuff helps but it's all so dry now. Is it an actual Hotbin make? If so it's worth following the instructions carefully to get it going.

Only in a Hotbin though. Only high temps kill the seeds.

It's a bit of a science supposed to be best if you turn it but buggered if I've got the energy for that. The Hotbin is another thing altogether, great for all food waste and seeding weeds as it kills everything that goes in it with the high temperatures but again it's a bit of a science.

Was just having that discussion with Shane. This is a hotbin one which I use mainly for food and small weeds my other two ordinary compost bins are still just dry twigs mainly as I'm not putting enough wet stuff in it or slicing up small enough. So will be putting more grass clippings/leaves in.

Today's mission I've been putting off for ages is to empty the compost hotbin which is bursting at the seams. 2.30 and Alexa reminds me for the 3rd time to get lunch as several distractions later as usual I forgot. Cheese and pickle sarnie then it's on it before the next days oven temps.

We've had them for years here, I hated them so bought a hotbin composter that I put all food waste in as well as some garden waste. Not cheap but it's paid for itself now as they put the green waste bin up so much.

Damn that reminder! I need to empty the Hotbin composter before I can empty the not so crispy crisper drawer soup. My life is a constant 'For want of a nail the war was lost'.

Been trying to make sense of the flows of our hotbin-wormery system now it’s properly up and running.

Lots of potential here, not least by being able to inoculate larger compost bays with the breeding worms and using the fine sieved compost to give our seedlings a really good start in life.

Yeah it was a big investment but it’s been brilliant so far. Just outside the house to deal with the trickier kitchen waste.

We’ve got a wormery right next to it, comes out the hotbin then into that. Worms only been there a few months but loads of little ones. Obviously works for them

My HotBin composter is at 108F. I believe if it gets any higher, it travels back to 1955.

Those of you with a low tolerance for compost-related chat might not find this as thrilling as I do but I finally bit the bullet & bought a Hotbin & it's only been in use 2 weeks but already when I open the lid, steam comes out! It's got a temp gauge and it's apparently 90F in there (44 outside).

How long did the process take and do you have a link for the hotbin you use?
December 29, 2024 at 4:45 PM
It composts at higher temps in a sealed container. Composting is generally quicker, no smell and although the rats obviously could chew in over time, there’s no smell to encourage it! The initial outlay is high 🥴 hotbincomposting.com

I have two compost areas. One for general stuffs, and a fucking expensive hotbin (can compost bones)

They've eaten into the fucking expensive hotbin.

I'm gutted as it is an amazing wormery as well. Going to have to get rid.
