The first colorful leaves and the tranquillity on this afternoon are unmistakable signs that the cooler half of the year is approaching fast. 🍃🍁🥰
This will be one of the last winters for the old Saltsjöbanan trains. In 2029/30, they will be replaced by brand-new Skoda units.

After way too many trains passed in the shadow, timetable and a sunny spell finally matched for the SJ Intercity to Malmö. These black locos are just too bad-ass looking. 🥰

"Gateau" bakery was founded in Saltsjöbaden 1937. Even if there's no shop anymore, we have one of their fantastic bullar on the train on this quiet autumn afternoon. This is a lovely railway and I'm glad I managed to see it before the modernisation. Goodbye, Saltsjöbanen! 🥰

Of course, we clocked up a whopping +20 before we even left Hamburg Hbf and another +20 until Pinneberg. Luckily, there is so much slack in the timetable, that despite the usual racial profiling in Padborg, we arrived in Malmö with less delay than imported from Germany.

Last leg, finally with a decent train - an Øresundståg "rubber nose" - to the brand new station of Varberg, where the single track line through the city has been replaced by a tunnel. Time to treat ourselves to a bulle.

The face of Göteborg's railways is changing rapidly. The new Västtrafik X80 trains are now in service and the M31, Göteborg's tram 2000 equivalent, are getting another big overhaul! 🤯

Neither, as the Buss leaves just before Mälartåg arrives. Fortunately, the station offers a good entertainment programme with a Pressbyrån (☕️!) and quite interesting trains passing through.

I really wanted to get an X2000 in full sun here. Not only this wasn't going to happen - things got even worse. 😬 A rain front came in and the farmer started to plough the field. Minutes later, we stood soaked in front of an ugly brown field. At least, we got a quite dramatic photo.

Change of spots to avoid the freshly ploughed field. I totally forgot how long the shadows already are up here at this time of the year. And of course you get sunlight when you don't want it, so it was rather a close call for the Snälltåget train at around five.

The train ends in Sala. The line towards the North is blocked, so we continue eastwards. And the train situation improved considerably, when two of Mälartåg's rather rare "Regina" EMU turned up. 🥰
A very pleasant ride through the late afternoon to Uppsala, where this day ends.

Finally: A train! Using old tunnelbana Stock from the 1970s, the 18km long Saltsjöbanan connects the seaside resort Saltsjöbaden and a number of suburban towns to the centre of Stockholm. Given the huge rail replacement offer, I'm not surprised by the rather low demand on the train.

After Kil, the Värmlansbanan curves through a hilly landscape with countless lakes. The sun has just set and all is illuminated by a magical light! 🥰
Fortunately, we can enjoy this a little longer as we (again!) don't cross the border to Norway and leave the train at Arvika.

It has been more than a day since the last light rail, about time to change that! At Årstaberg, we change to one of Tvärbanan's quirky trams for a short tangential trip to Sickla. Nomen est omen, I feel kind of sick(la) when looking at these horrible yellow panels inside the tram.

SJ's retrofitted X2000 Snabbtåg is the best long distance train in Europe and I'm ready to die on this hill. Design, seat comfort, on-board services - all as good as it gets. A great example that trains don't have to be sterile tubes with glaring light, hard seats and bad air.

And then, finally, a good train! We're on SJ's old but very cozy loco hauled Intercity service towards Oslo. The train features a bistro car, coffee supply is provided. 🥰

Next up: The Saltsjöbanan light rail. Heavily affected by the reconstruction of the Slussen node, ongoing since the founding of Stockholm mid 13th century, the line is currently cut back to Saltsjö-Järla in the suburbs. Fortunately there is an easy to understand replacement service.😬
