#HyperMedia
we have this "hypermedia and multimedia" class and i think it was *supposed* to be a photoshop class, instead it is the "computer please generate images with different lighting" class

Hey funny you should mention Atompub! :) Portable Web Spaces was ABSOLUTELY inspired by Atompub (a book on it was my first introduction to so many things - standardized storage, hypermedia-ish APIs, etc, back in the day)!

> Hypermedia is cool

Then implement all what HyperCard did... 39 years ago

And the 90s tools it inspired:

- WorldWideWeb (hyperlinks)
- Macromedia Authorware (flowline, low-code)
- Toolbook (books and pages, low-code)

A possibly niche but fun idea: leveraging the graph of for/id attributes that make up the document's intertextual references to introspect the document itself, showing how parts relate, using its own components

Hypermedia is cool

in other words it is not hard for me to imagine a hyperaddressable, polyglot, content-addressed, hypermedia literate programming environment that is completely deterministic

what we've done with ai coding agents is make a messier, more expensive, stochastic (and thus inferior) version of that

JSON APIs might not be truly RESTful? 🤔

To call your distributed system RESTful, you must satisfy specific constraints.

You need to use hypermedia.

It's fascinating how this foundational document for the web has evolved into a general term for what we consider 'good' in API design.

We didn't skip hypermedia, we unbundled it. Links became Arazzo, forms became OpenAPI and JSON Schema, meaning became Overlays, discovery became well-known paths and agent cards. The one thing the documents can't carry is what's possible right now, for this resource. That stays in the response.
We Did Not Skip Hypermedia, We Moved It Out Of The Response
Earlier today I wrote that we had the agent protocol in 2008 and left it on the table. Leonard Richardson laid out a heuristic at QCon that topped out at hyp...

And let's be honest, in a hypermedia culture, there is no act that is not aware of itself unless you perform it in the dark and in secret.

That doesn't translate immediately to "self-promotion" or "performative" or "virtue signaling."

Leonard Richardson's 2008 QCon talk: links tell you where the resources are, and forms tell you what you can do to them. Providers stopped one step short of hypermedia, because only a human at a browser could decide what to do next. Agents are the client that talk was missing.

On November 20, 2008, Leonard Richardson stood up at QCon and gave a talk he styled after an episode of This American Life. Three acts and a conclusion. The ...

The buried line: <hype> is hypermedia, not excitement. Early Netscape played Andreessen asking what global hypermedia is on click. First proper write-up of that tag is a real ship.
