copies with no original (eg we click on the floppy disk icon to save but floppy disks basically no longer exist) and live in a state of 'hyperreality' where signs and symbols used to represent reality have instead replaced reality. consensus doesn't exist on what's real or not real.

Also shout out to Team Wagner/McMahon for these images, which sparked my exploration of simulacra and hyperreality

The Trackmania titles of that era as well as certain Team Fortress 2 maps are the only other games that have really tapped into that dreamlike hyperreality for me. Neon White I guess is similar too, but more stylised.

you don't have to agree with Baudrillard's application of hyperreality to find use in its theory within a Marxist framework

Material conditions matter, and thus so does material harm, but there is material harm and then there is symbolic harm

My tits being out is not me raping a child in any meaningful sense, but in the hyperreality of symbolic media calling it that is treated as the same as it being that

Hello, the simulated city! Welcome to your new adventure, where Baudrillardian illusionists navigate through the global village, encountering the illusions of hyperreality while breaking free from the panopticon!

2 each is a hyperreality so distinct from the thing itself. That it is unrecognizable. Your ideas of events and individuals are so shaped by your data bubble that they no longer reflect objective reality. Within the bubble it's unimportant. But separate bubbles cannot effectively communicate.

Not really for any of the Baudrillardian hyperreality or authoritarian doublespeak or “are we the baddies” stuff people talk about, I don’t consider that to offer any particularly unique insights, just like…wow everyone on here is so bad at war and they don’t seem to realize it lol

'hyperreality' basically just describes something like what society looks/acts/behaves like when the correspondence theory of truth is ideologically assumed as a given, facilitated by various new technologies which can easily appear as having captured 'the Truth' (audiovisual recording etc)

the hyperreality comes in where brand recognition and ubiquity of the specific product, now pumped to its maximum bloat & self-assuredness, cranked and overleveraged to hell and back for sheer shareholder return, completely replaces any commonly understood concept of what the original problem was.

and they should have changed his name in that movie but that's more of a "unbelievable hyperreality" issue

That is, the base of empirical evidence that trans backlash contributed to Trump winning in ‘24 or that it is something that moves large numbers of unsorted / floating voters was always next to non-existent, however much a social fact it might have become within the hyperreality of consultant-space.

somebody needs to write a thing about:

a) the hyperreality of retail pricing vs what you learn in econ 101
b) the hyper-hyperreality of "surge pricing" retail as some kind of terrarium simulacrum of supply and demand

the Iranian LEGO AI slop creator quoted Baudrillard and hyperreality as his inspiration but that quote was actually from Borges, further twisting the knife of the irony of the hyperreal, I intone wisely to a small child. He can’t read. There is a literacy crisis bc we give all our money to war.

Much of this analysis is based in Debord and Bauldrillard, with hyperreality taken straight from Simulacra and Simulation.

The flipside to this is the frictionlessness of the social media unreality; why engage with the real when a more comfortable space is so readily available? This keeps a person inside their own bubble of hyperreality, and in doing so makes them capable of naught but consumption.
