The way Semenya was treated was not even pseudoscience. It was arbitrary, capricious, and targeted at her personally: the IAAF deemed her a woman until she hit 400 meters, when she became a man, then at 1 mile she became a woman again. Disgraceful and inexcusable.
Please read this from Caster Semenya and remember the humiliating and degrading testing she's been put through is what Republican legislatures have endorsed in their attacks against trans people--up to and including coercive medical treatments forced onto young people whose bodies defy the binary.

The way Semenya was treated was not even pseudoscience. It was arbitrary, capricious, and targeted at her personally: the IAAF deemed her a woman until she hit 400 meters, when she became a man, then at 1 mile she became a woman again. Disgraceful and inexcusable.
The IAAF has previously denied suggesting such surgery to the athletes concerned. However the above Study reveals that the surgery was proposed to athletes, and one of the doctors involved is Stéphane Bermon, Director of the IAAF Health and Science Department.

In Semenya before CAS the IAAF argued that her exclusion had nothing to do with her legal sex, and even used the notion of "sports sex". We've gone from that to prominent figures misgendering her and Khelif.

The Wikipedia article provides more information and context. The Barr body test was done from 1967 to 1992 for women athletes in the IAAF and IOC.

Did you know? Chromosome testing in sports has been done before and was stopped because cisgender people repeatedly learned that their chromosomes didn’t match their assigned sex. — Something the “XX and XY only” crowd seems to have forgotten.

IAAF authorities then allowed them to continue competing in the female category 1 year after gonadectomy’. The above is a nice way of saying that the four athletes were subject to partial clitoral amputation and surgical widening of the vagina.
