The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), ICE's internal watchdog, has opened over 100 cases against individuals accused of 'doxing' and threatening ICE employees online. The controversy escalated when poll worker Paigelynn Gonyea refused to sign a warning notice from ICE agents at a polling site in Syracuse, New York, after they cited an Instagram post she allegedly made in January. Gonyea claimed the post was about an ICE agent involved in a fatal incident and called for his indictment, but the agents interpreted it as a threat. OPR, which typically investigates employee misconduct and inspects detention facilities, has increasingly targeted civilians for online speech, according to court documents. ICE officials reported 131 cases between January 2025 and March 2026, though it remains unclear how many resulted in charges. Critics argue that expanding definitions of 'doxing' to include photographing ICE agents and using internal investigations to silence dissent threatens free speech. The article highlights the tension between national security and civil liberties, with legal experts warning of potential overreach by agencies like ICE.
