big agree! listening and talking to the TPGA folks at #INSAR2025 was a huge highlight of my trip. a month out, these conversations helped inform my summer projects and funding priorities with my advisor.

I met Dora Raymaker AND Kristen Bottema-Beutel AND Steven Kapp this week. I met David Mandell back in December and saw him again this week. I cite their work in conversations at least once a week. And they WERE all super cool and super nice and super supportive! #INSAR2025
Screw "never meeting your heroes." What were some times you met your heroes and they were super cool?

I'll post about #INSAR2025 in coming days but I just wanted to start by saying my biggest highlight this was was getting to see my students ✨SHINE✨. I am so proud of their deeply meaningful work and who they are as people.

Some slight mis-typings in my posts for the last panel, my brain is definitely on day 4 of #INSAR2025 & not keeping up with my type-then-posting.

For any questions and clarifications on talks, many of the amazing panelists are on here and would likely be able to clarify/answer questions/ share more

Blasko using AAC: "I hope the questions are kind, and I habe strong feelings, and I am respectful of all perspectives."

Jaswal and Blasko highlight the importance of ensuring that no autistic person with high support needs is left behind in research.

THIS is the discussion that I would have expected in a SIG about research priorities for autistic people with HSN. We need more authentic representation.

May 3, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Chat GPT state that participation in research involves:
- communication skills
- critical thinking
- collaboration
- self-advocacy

Therefore, autistic people with HSN need to have formal & informal opportunities to learn & develop these skills to address the gatekeeping that exists.

#INSAR2025
May 3, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Jaswal highlights the potential harm that not including autistic people with HSN can (and does) have.

Blasko & Jaswal highlight that there is a need for going further than accommodations, but true involvement is providing opportunities to enable HSN autistic people to participate.

May 3, 2025 at 7:15 PM
Now hearing from Grant Blasko & Vikram Jaswal, who are the discussants for this panel.

Opening the discussion by highlighting why it is important that there is a panel on neuroaffirming and inclusive research practices for autistic people with HSN.

"Who gets to be the expert"

@heasutherland.com discusses the dilemma about who the perceived expert is.

Sustained self-advocacy often difficult for autistic people w HSN.
- long-term staff often seen as experts
- new staff have new ideas
- autistic people have autism-specific insight
