Aside from that, saw some interesting caveats to the game I hadn't spotted before. So for one, IWD2 has a system where ranged damage rolls are ammo based not weapon based, and you have to stock up on ammo. What's more, unlike 5e, in 3e weapon finesse requires a feat to opt in.

You'll also note that Clarice has a tiny amount of days compared to Barb - a particular quirk of IWD2 is there is no "long rest" - you heal gradually unless you have healing spells in the party which means that for many characters, a single rest to full health can be a month 😅

This is my first time making meaningful progress in IWD2 and I think it says something about just how excellent these games were that this is by a good margin the weakest game on the Infinity Engine and it's still like top 10 greatest RPGs of all time material.

Didn't think I would return to Icewind Dale 2 in 2026. Since the source code was supposedly lost to time & Beamdog isn't pursuing a IWD2 Enhanced Edition, the modding community came to the rescue to make their own 'Enhanced Edition' mod!

Replaying infinity engine games in in-setting chronological order. Not sure I’m going to make it through IWD2 though. The game is DIRE. Partly because it can’t be remastered like the rest of them- different game system!- but mostly the flaws are deeper.

Seriously, an axe that every time you throw it it turns into a lightning bolt then returns to your hand is so clutch when you have boots of speed and Isair and Madae have no ranged attacks when they're out of spells 😅

Finally got my stupidly modded up Baldurs Gate EE setup working, restoration+tweak mods, IWD2 subraces, some 6-8 quest mods and a few of the better modded companions, and the huge Artisan Kit mod.

Played the hell out of this, BG2, Icewind Dale, IWD2 in the last few years. The enhanced editions are still a lot of fun. My first copy was on 5 CD's and the 5th disc was scratched..... 😱

Relatedly: I like the infinity engine for Baldur’s Gate 1&2 and Icewind Dale. But I ALWAYS bounce off IWD2- it’s just not a flexible enough engine for 3e, a different system. Neverwinter Nights, despite its… unfortunate… starting campaign WORKS with the system.
