Happy #IZM2026 international zine month! As #des_revol and #PrairielandDFW remind us: zines are not a crime but they are dangerous—that’s the whole point of literacy. Reading and writing challenge the powers that be.

Fight the power—make a zine.
Black and white pattern with typewritten prompts for each day of July. Text reads INTERNATIONAL ZINE MONTH JULY 2026. 31 prompts but very difficult to read.

My "shelfie" for International Zine Month! Here's my zine collection. This little file organizer is perfect for zines! #IZM2026
A collection of colourful zines of various sizes sitting in a black file organizer on the floor, shot from the front and at an angle. A yellow zine with an illustration of a snail is visible, as is a white zine by Justin Million with a match taped to it. A collection of colourful zines of various sizes sitting in a black file organizer on the floor, shot from the back and straight on. The zines are visible through the lattice of the organizer.

I'll be sharing some free zines for International Zine Month. The first is this important and timely zine by Adela Czyzewska about anti-trans legislation in Alberta's education system, which can be read and downloaded here: www.adelaczyzewska.ca/zine-ma-thesis #IZM2026

When I have the time, I'd love to start a regular zine drop-in group where folks can show up, eat snacks, and make zines (and other crafts) together. It'd be a chill, low-key space where we can learn from and teach each other. #IZM2026

I made a new zine today. #IZM2026
A hand holding a mini zine in front of a blue wall with a light blue-and-yellow pattern on it and some stickers of leaves and the inside of a cut tree trunk. Handwritten text reads, "BEANS FOR ZINES." The hand holding the zine open in front of the blue wall. There are more nature stickers on it. Handwritten text reads, "A return to making zines. Fluidity between zine researcher and zinester. Neither one nor the other, but both. It is difficult after writing so many essays to just write creatively. My analytical brain is on. Do I need to cite my sources? How do I add the Zotero plugin? I stop and I start. My creativity sputters. I try to let go, but I keep thinking about bloody email! How tragic."

My zine origin story is that I was documenting my transition several years ago using different mediums and needed a way to pull the pieces of my story together into a coherent narrative. The zine form offered me the perfect way to do this! I have loved making zines ever since. #IZM2026
