Important work here:
About three months ago Tavia Nyong’o & I conceived of a collection of essays on The Epstein Class and the University meant to consider the ubiquity is sexual violence in the university & the fundamental fact that access to young women has long been a side perk of university employment & attendance.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens.

We are.

500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term.

Our tally is almost certainly an undercount.

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job.

Think about that in context of
AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP.

Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down.

"AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago.

We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Whole thread is great but especially this (and the 3-book Venn diagram). Now more than ever, (white cis class-privileged) men are citizens and the rest of us are collateral damage at best.
we are watching a massive transfer of wealth during an era of massive wealth creation (however much it might be just paper money it’s powerful) — reinscribing gender during this moment is a choice about who will be a citizen for the next three hundred years.

According to the most rigorous studies, 10.8% of college men perpetrate at least one rape before graduation.

This statistic always comes to mind when I see men in power reacting with disgust to the idea that one of their peers could face even a shred of accountability.

"I've got you," Mamdani assured him, grabbing his hand as Sliwa received his flu shot.

College radio is my whole heart. WAMH 89.3 FM FOREVER!
📻 To celebrate College Radio Day, tune in to more than a century of college radio history.

In 1906, Harvard students formed what was described as the first college radio club. By the 1920s, students were building stations and broadcasting campus events.

So much good useful important stuff in @nbedera.bsky.social ‘s thread here on what professors/teachers/instructors can do to support survivors and those going through trauma:
In light of today’s conversation on academic accommodations, I’m going to revive a thread lost to time when I deleted my Twitter profile.

It’s about a bunch of academic accommodations that instructors can offer in lieu of an extension on an assignment. 🧵

Accountability: a thread. (& also we should discuss this OUTSIDE of a family model too because ideally we would live in a society and not a hellscape where women* and mothers* are our only safety net. & thank you @nbedera.bsky.social because social failure is not your fault! We ♥️ your wise counsel.)
I’m seeing a lot of posts about talking to your sons in light of the Cornell article.

And yes. Talk to your sons. Here are some things you should say, based on anti-violence research about what they need to hear:

The David Lynch quote isn't "Let me change your heart or we can discuss accountability"
If someone is doing real damage and demonstrates a sustained lack of interest in accounting for it then, imo, the time for talking about “accountability” is over. Then it’s time for talking about how to best attack and undermine their power to do that damage. Changing their heart is not a factor.

A certain elite SLAC made the poor choice to send an email today about the new community art project in honor* of 50 years of coeducation: they send you a cloth square to embellish a concept that starts with CO; you return it; they make a quilt. Sweet, right? [1/2]
