Road wear and therefore maintenance is proportional to the 4th power of weight, meaning essentially all of it is caused by commercial trucks, not passenger vehicles - EV *or* ICEV.

And we should not forget the particulates emissions, which have huge negative health effects in cities. These are in large part caused by tire wear, which is only a function of vehicle weight not source of power (thus EVs are as bad as ICEV)

If you are paying attention to the energy market like I am than you know that solar, wind, and storage will displace the vast majority of fossil fuel generation in less than twenty years and obviously all new vehicle sales by then will be BEVs.
So, big question is pace of existing ICEV conversion.

If you are paying attention to the energy market like I am than you know that solar, wind, and storage will displace the vast majority of fossil fuel generation in less than twenty years and obviously all new vehicle sales by then will be BEVs.

Then you can market EVs based on their unique strengths. Specifically: no ICEV will refuel in your driveway overnight, but an EV will. So again, for that Monday-Friday commute and errands use case, 150 miles will do and you start every day with a "full tank." Upfront cost and operating cost are low

Right now, what is holding back EVs is cost. What drives that cost is the need to try to match the functional "freedom factor" that you get out of the cheapest ICEV. Not because we actually need it (we drive 40 miles/day on average) but because it was baked into the market by a century of car ads

My son lives on the 10th floor of a high rise. Charging at a high speed charger on his way home from work is still cheaper than petrol. Add in the maintenance cost savings of an EV compared to ICEV, and the EV is much cheaper.

You can charge an EV entirely off of only a diesel generator and it would still be cleaner than an ICEV.
