Het is wespentijd. Heerlijk!

Pimpla hypocondriaca/rufipes. Parasiterar större fjärilslarver

I worked on euphorine braconids for my PhD but I haven't really touched it since, so it was nice to be included and help contribute in this updated version of the dichotomous key. Hope it will be useful to people as the old version was to me.

endogenous viral genome dispersal in Ichneumonoidea is the virus domestication equivalent of the floppyfication of dog ears and I will not allow myself to be silenced any longer

A very warm welcome to @ddpichenumonidae.bsky.social as he joins our team of subject editors! We're excited for him to share his knowledge in Hymenoptera systematics and look forward to working with him.

Da sind dann die Brackwespen auch noch mit im Spiel ;)

Here's a tidy new study on the repeated, convergent evolution of a set of parasitic wasp traits when they switch to attacking wood-boring insects. Apparently this behavior and suite of characters pops up several times in the ichneumonid searcher wasps. #Entomology #Insects
A host driven parasitoid syndrome: Convergent evolution of multiple traits associated with woodboring hosts in Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea)
The evolution of convergent phenotypes is of major interest in biology because of their omnipresence and ability to inform the study of evolutionary novelty and constraint. Convergent phenotypes can b...

My identification is:
Incredibly cute blobs, also too small for me. 😎

(Some day I'll have to get into Chalcidoidea. Once I've finished with the bigger Ichneumonoidea, i.e. about 2326)
For some reason the Unsorted Exotic Diptera is full of microscopic Afrotropical wasps, what lucky individual who wants to ID them for us?? cc @toomanywasps.bsky.social @tapani-hopkins.bsky.social

Hoo boy…isn’t that what about 3/4 of species separations are based on in Ichneumonoidea?

... and, unexpected bonus wasps, spotted today while waiting for those much more elusive ones. Cuckoo wasp from the Chrysididae, and a mystery wasp from the Ichneumonoidea. Probably.

You suggest worldichneumonidae.com as a good source of names for @gbif.org ... GBIF gets most of its names from Catalogue of Life and it follows Taxapad Ichneumonoidea www.catalogueoflife.org/data/dataset... ... @mdoering.bsky.social may help with explaining why that is.

Looking for a long ovipositor is a nice rule of thumb for parasitoid wasps in superfamily Ichneumonoidea. With other superfamilies like Vespidae, which includes paper wasps, the rule doesn't hold at all. BUT only females can sting.

Aiheeseen liittyy, että selailin iNaturalist-havaintoja, ja huomasin pistiäisen joka näytti aluksi tutuhkolta, sitten tutulta, ja sitten "hetkinen, onkos tämä kaimani?".

Of course, I have to remember to keep the Microgastrinae from ZMUT.21451 (1/4 sample Hymenoptera) in a separate tube to those of ZMUT.7534 (3/4 sample Ichneumonoidea), so I can mark the former as coming from the 1/4 sample.

Where do I sign up for my new career, writing opaque user manuals?
