Kentish barn, eyerolling at yet another walker cooing at the oast house at its shoulder. Hop cones on the vines in the hedgerows at Ightham Mote Farm, & hoppers huts on the field edges. Hop-picking holiday country, somewhere hereabouts, that Grandad knew as a boy.

When I saw that you had gone all in on Hever, my heart sank because I thought that might do me but then I didn't want to seem to be jumping on your bandwagon. However, we are lucky to have so many options here. I could have tried Standen again or Ightham Mote.

The Ightham Mote long gallery, later chapel, from outside. The building with a bell on top is a stair turret. The gallery was originally built with an open loggia, all the range in 1524 among those in the know.

When we surveyed Ightham we also had a run in with a groundsman. He wasn't happy about us treading on his flowerbed. It was the only place we could put a ladder to get our colleague out of the boat on the moat for our survey. The current almost swept him under the bridge towards the moat's drain.

Ightham Mote, Kent. The view from the top of the gatehouse shows the 16th century long gallery & refronted 14th century chamber blocks.

View from the gatehouse across the courtyard of Ightham Mote. The hall and parlour were built at the heart of the medieval moated site in 1340. The hall was given a new window around the time the gatehouse was built .

The gatehouse of Ightham Mote, Kent for #ADoorableThursday. A 16th century insertion into a 15th century lodging range. One of my earlier pencil studies.

I have spent all morning trying to get my brain, which incidentally is melting, around Sabine's latest #PalacesAndGardens theme of #PalacePuzzle. Co-host AnnaLois says we're just going to have to embrace collages today, so
Here I go. On with the Motely. Clue.

This lunchtime visited the wonderful National Trust property Ightham Mote near Sevenoaks in Kent. Fab building creaking with history. Nice lunch and took some free coffee grounds to put around acid loving plants and add to compost. Garden is parched like everywhere at the mo. Still worth a visit.

Sorry.😉
It’s a magical place.
It was visiting there a number of years ago that made us decide to join the National Trust.
I have an affinity to the area and Ightham particularly as I was born in Kent and my aunt left me this piece of marquetry which I love, it even has swans in it.

Keith said “they were dedicating what, in his belief, was the most celebrated tomb, certainly in Britain, as a monument to the most distinguished man of the former generation”, one who because he “occupied no learned position had always a greater and much harder uphill fight than the professional”

Today marks the centenary of the National Trust's acquisition of the Coldrum megalithic monument, as a memorial to grocer-archaeologist Benjamin Harrison (d. 1921). As the Kent & Sussex Courier reported, the monument “was dedicated to the public use” at an afternoon ceremony on Sat 10 July 1926 🧵
