Destroying fascism will require a little illiberalism

In most areas we'd recognize a call for regulations to strictly enforce and strengthen existing social hierarchies as repugnant illiberalism. But not in land use where you see this demand all the time.
"Why are both AB and BC Conservative governments hating on multiplexes?"

Well, this e-mail from the VP of a major real estate services & investment firm to the Premier of AB and Edmonton City Council should give some hints.

It’s a great day to get out there and cast your vote to repudiate and defy Trump, MAGA, Christian nationalists, fascists, and all the forces of illiberalism.

I share @mcopelov.bsky.social’s gratitude to everyone whose work to preserve free elections led to this Election Day.

The USA has only been a full-ish democracy since 1965, & our union remained fragile & flawed.

Now, we’ve slid towards illiberalism:

"In redressing PiS’s transgressions, [Tusk] faced a “post-illiberal trilemma”: In principle, [Tusk] was committed to delivering quick, effective, and unimpeachably legal solutions to illiberalism. In practice however, it could often fulfill at best only two of these three conditions at once."

Do you know what annoys me the most about this? It's not the illiberalism, it's that she is misusing statistics.

Hungarian 'illiberalism' was in such a state of decay it was a house of cards.

Ironically exactly at the same time it was considered 'a model solution' in USA.

It was like copying Soviet model of governance in mid 1980s.

Right illiberalism is inherently vastly more like left illiberalism than either is to liberalism.

Sorry, not sorry.

I just DO NOT CARE about "capitalism" or "socialism" or any of that. It's abstract bullshit for ideologues of all persuasions to argue about. I care about "liberalism" and "illiberalism".

Whether Meta favored Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s election will “need to wait for new revelations, research, or, ideally, a full investigation,” write Clara Iglesias Keller, Robert Gorwa and João C. Magalhães. But they argue the episode offers lessons for how platform governance is changing.

Loothing and violence are perfectly fine. And conspiracy theories won't help to clear the situation. Radical tactics are valid and assumed in face of the level of illiberalism we reached.

There’s a far more pervasive source of illiberalism in America, one that is already reshaping social norms that have been the bedrock of liberal society for decades.

It’s college-educated women, particularly younger ones. | Daniel Foster

Brazil’s vote “illustrates the concrete peril of allowing digital platforms’ content governance regimes to operate without direct democratic transparency,” write Clara Iglesias Keller, Robert Gorwa and João C. Magalhães, noting Brazil has no comprehensive platform law.

or just like, a un-self-aware illiberalism which longs for the mandating of restrictive and exclusionary systems of “belonging” as necessarily a superior way of life, but since we’re leftists we’ll pretend the traditions we’re longing for were great for everyone

We could lose America because of @rephaleystevens.bsky.social selfishness.

Can we imagine Rogers standing up to Trump or JD Vance (God forbid he becomes president).

Rogers is NOT going to stand up for liberal democracy. He's going to let Vance's illiberalism reign.

But when a system is already so broken and corrupted you usually can't make all the proper corrections via strictly "constitutional" means. Which this paper identifies as a Post-Illiberal Trilemma www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/dem...

I feel like the record is more mixed? The Porfiriato ultimately ended poorly for Mexico, but Meiji-era illiberalism might've been unwound successfully if the Emperor Taishō had lived? Singapore seems to have transitioned steadily away from the Lee Kuan Yew era?

Who is the next test of this? Kagame?

American social wellness still remains a battle against illiberalism and fascism. Threat against the consent of the people will continue.

There are no "colleagues across the aisle". They are the duped enablers of extranational techno- Oligarchs bent on destroying democracies.
