They are supposed to look villainous and unsettling since they are supposed to be a contrast between their cute selfs and their forms that used to resemble them in a way that doesn’t look like them, it’s pretty much a symbolic to how moomin looked towards moominmama when he came out of the hat. Except here it’s fitted into a more villainous perfective on how Emily sees their queerness like it’s something unbelievable to her.
