#Immersionist
I’m curious!

Oxymoron density is high in ”Immersionist co-GMing”!

looks like vampire 6 is going the way of narrative metacurrencies and mechanized drama which i mean sure long time coming but also a pity as VtM spearheaded immersionist style playing for me

Yeah. I have a couple of long-term ambitions I don't often fess up to, like bringing my own preferred forms of immersion to an audience that's never done it and might like it, including a certain kind of immersionist co-GMing I don't see represented anywhere.

maybe i can cap off the final rulebook of 10k swords as my big epic ttrpg magnum opus. an excessively simulationist immersionist game in the now lost tradition of Artesia or Fading Suns or even Vampire: The Masquerade. then i can just go back to writing webnovels/flashfics/poems

I am back from Immersion festival in the beautiful city of Turku, the spiritual home of hardcore immersionist role-play. I have been a wannabe rapper, a failed performance artist, and an entirely malevolent Faerie. Mainly I have been with my people, eating salmiakki ice cream in the sun.

Immersionist co-GMing is exactly my focus right now. It's possible, it's not a pipe dream!

Bumping this up to the top, because I think it goes to the heart of the matter: different games (and players!) are centered on different things. Immersion vs. crunch.

Still, as an immersionist, I’d love to see this as an option in more games.

this kind of gameplay style really only works for high sim games. that's a specific genre of rpgs, not rpgs in general. some rpgs can and should emphasize more visible gameyness. roguelites (as distinct from roguelikes) come to mind, as does diablo-style arpgs

David Henry Brown Jr. is an Interventionist/immersionist performance artist and sculptor who works in diverse mediums, often placing his physical body into the work. Frequently riffing off of the dark side of American popular culture,

(Actually I’m an immersionist as a player. Simulationism supports it for me, gamism can be neutral or mildöy negative, non-light dramatism/narrativism throws spanners in the works. As a GM I am usually simulationist but I’m a lot more versatile, and have unnamed stances like ”film director stance”.)

I've done it as a GM. It works great, but you're right it isn't compatible with a heavy immersionist "you only know what your PC knows" approach. Interestingly, this comes into RPGs early on; the famous Enemy Within campaign for WFRP has the players playing the participants of a trial.

2/ Some other notable takeaways.

What we'd see as immersionist living world simulationist games he calls "storytelling".

He splits RPG as game into wargaming and power gaming.

(He's among the best of the theorists at trying to be non judgemental but doesn't quite manage it with power gaming)

Michelle Qureshi is bringing her crystal singing bowls, Native American flutes, guitars, capos, alternate tunings, and looper pedals to create layers of sound, to form an improvised and meditative composition for the listeners.

A sound immersionist will bring a unique show to Waynesville
For Michelle Qureshi, an award-winning classically trained guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer from Indianapolis, sound itself is inspiring.

Possible rabbit hole. Does "fiction first" link to the old LRP principle of "FOIP" (find out in play) or is that more related to the heavily immersionist end of the hobby? It was originally coined because certain players were seemingly incapable of not spilling OOC secrets I think.

I think it's something that people feel rather than do, so you can have two people in the same game and one will experience it and one won't. (I used to think I was a pretty hardcore immersionist until I got to know some of the "play for bleed" people).

The reason I said immersionist is that it seems like recent discourse on bsky seems to be leaning that way. As in "my decisions and actions have real in world consequences" but I also agree with you. I think of them as more descriptors or just plain adjectives rather than taxonomic categories

In my Shadowdark game, we were sitting around scheming and plotting an attack on a local goblins king, and it struck me that this exactly is what Blades in the Dark flashbacks are intended to get rid of. So, in a way, FitD is a rejection of immersionist/simulationist play that is big in OSR

Seeing this dynamic emerging from args posed by contemporary detractors and then in later demographic research on the mid- and post-Immersionist neighborhood. On the one hand there’s clear white saviorism that nonetheless serves to stabilize the population. On the other hand, vulture capitalism,

Well, I'm more of a "full immersionist" when it comes to social media, just curating my 'general' feed with blocks and mutes; not having any kind of hashtag filters here is freaking PRESCHOOL!

Also, I've gotten more threats directed at me here then on YEARS of Twitter.

So, it's not all roses here.

There's a fine line of how much performing-to-others is considered socially acceptable, but the position of that line depends on play cultures.

In Nordic immersionist/simulationist scene the threshold is low, gamists don't care, and in some dramatist/narrativist scenes the more the merrier.

The only other Caledon paraphenalia I have rezzed full-time is the Penzance Founder seal above the doorway in my church. (I don't know if there are any other such plaques on display in Zindra! The First Church of Rosedale moved to the mainland before getting swept up in the Rapture.)

Immersion is important, but not always necessary for fun, imho. The person that comes along and just roll dice can have fun without grokking the setting, while the immersionist is not satisfied with just rules.
