As I keep saying, I do not think people know that there is basically no legal way to immigrate here by applying.
This is remarkable. New Quinnipiac poll finds support for path to legalization for most undocumented immigrants has risen to 64%. Only 31% want most of them deported.
That's a 14 point net swing for legalization since Trump took office.

Immigration is a net good. It improves the lives of the people who immigrate and the people in the areas the immigrate to. Supporting immigration is both morally and economically sound and a good government would encourage and facilitate it instead of making it as difficult as possible

I also think we could be talking a lot more about how much harder it is to legally immigrate today than it was 50 years ago.
Which is why it's so frustrating when you see the people say "well I don't mind immigrants but my folks came here the right way." There's no easy way to get through to these people that when they talk about "the illegals" they plan to make *everyone* suffer, & even selfish fools have reason to care.
The Puerto Rico thing is the loudest signal that all the criticism of illegal immigration is just cloaking underlying prejudice, and that the inner circles are so bigoted they don't realize when their jokes aren't gonna land at all.
