Another attempt inspired by reading the poems on here. My friend who told me this tale didn't believe her own eyes but said her scientific-rational husband would never have made it up. For @dragonslayerma.bsky.social #Promptcombo #InThisDarkHour

Thank you so much, Fidel @dragonslayerma.bsky.social for hosting this week's #PromptCombo #InThisDarkHour. I'm a little under pressure of time this week so this isn't new but a bit of gothic seems to fit the bill. Will try and catch up with other responses later

Hello @dragonslayerma.bsky.social, thanks for this week's fabulous #PromptCombo. Here's a very hasty contribution to #InThisDarkHour!

Blackhouse There are no lights now beneath this hill. The outline of blackhouse, animal shelters - of someone’s home. We were stolen from our land so the laird could run his sheep. Washed up on a far shore where the seasons were harsh. Never forgetting, tasting salt on the wind that never leaves us.

In This Dark Hour In this dark hour, when the walls breathe and the silence grows teeth, Life twists into something wrong. A trembling shape hunched in the corner, watching me with my own stolen eyes. Once warm, familiar, mine. Now it drags its nails along the floorboards, whispering in a voice that sounds like memory but tastes like rot. It crawls closer each night, hungry for the pieces of me I forgot to guard. In this dark hour, the air is choking as the room holds its breath. Life lingers in the quiet, waiting for the moment the last light dies so it can finally show me what it has become. What I will become.

In this dark hour I see a shadow standing at the lapping shore awaiting instructions for entering the deep In this dark hour I watch as younger versions walk away, hand and hand into a light I cannot hold In this dark hour I see myself reflected back more beautiful and stronger than I knew In this dark hour I meet myself again, every night within the dream stepping gently out of the underworld

The Darkest Hour The town clings to the cliffside. A restful creature, cocooned in worn, rugged arms. In this dark hour golden, cat-eyed windows glow, winking secrets to watchers unseen. Inside they are warm tonight, wrapped in the wool of illusion, dreaming behind bolted doors as the rose-black sea sings its lullaby. Soothed by the refrain, I drift alone, a splinter of breath on the devouring tide. The moonlight breaks across the crests of the waves, laying kisses on the charcoal shore with the tenderness of a widow touching a grave. It's beyond the horizon now, the place I called home. The warm bread on the table, turned to stone. The hold of safe hands released. I look away from life, lay back in my dancing cradle, gaze upwards to long dead stars, the only mocking witnesses to my gentle descent. Rocked to slumber, I close my eyes and succumb to the rose-black sea's embrace.

What an exquisite theme Fidel! Enjoy the week!
Here’s an old one…
After The Nightmare Watch over me this unslept night, meld of the new, the old, watch over me. Jolting arthritic CCTV awake and focus, should my curtains think to open. Watch over me, strung and singing satellites: prayer-beads part-way to paradise. Watch over me Jodrell-ears of kitchened dog, and you, paramedics always at-the-ready, circling the city’s lights as green-hued moths. Watch over me, watch over me this unslept night, huddled figures of the Compline, within plain but stretching hearts you must find and chant my name.

Yeah, well... This resonates very keenly with last night's cinema trip. So, as always, we leant in...
Hail Mary by S Reeson this frame of reference is skewed that you believe that what cannot be is somehow different or wrong when it is us holding ourselves back that what we all are made of is the key is liberation can provide without fear when we cannot frame the unexplained this is the evolution we require is this what is needed to be free in this dark hour the stars’ enlightenment that our notation only works for us when there is so much left to learn

A poem by Debbie Ross entitled 60 Degrees North two stanzas text as follows: At Simmer Dim the sun dips below the horizon line just long enough to make a sunset a sunrise, in perpetual twilight. At Winter Solstice the sun barely gets out of bed, just 5 hours of daylight and 19 hours of night, bleak and black, an endless darkest night.
