I almost missed Willem Dafoe's birthday!
From a Friday Night Comics workshop: "Your Celebrity Crush is in Love with You." Capturing likeness is always a challenge, especially so in five minutes per panel, with no penciling first. But no excuses! Happy Birthday, Willem!

As I've mentioned, I'm rereading all my old diary comics since I'm not really making comics right now and feel bad about it. So anyway. Here's another post by Tressie that reminded me of another comic of mine...

This is my contribution to the Tillie Walden discourse, from when she hosted a Friday Night Comics workshop with The Believer magazine, before SAW took it over. I look forward to reading her book.

A photo of a photo* I took in New York some time last century.
*You say "blurry," I say "soft focus" 😂😇📷

At the time I took the photo, my eye was drawn to the woman in the satiny dress in the doorway. Now all of the people look interesting to me.

Self soothing by looking at my old comics on IG just now, I scrolled all the way down & saw this drawing from 6 years ago today. A positive that came out of the pandemic was a lot of online gatherings, including these #usktalks hosted by #urbansketchers I always drew the participants as I listened.

Here's the #comic I made for the 20th anniversary.

The comic that changed it all. That time my daughters gave me advice on how to make my comics more "likable." After that, I started making four-panel squares for the algorithm, and the rest is history. :D

For a few years in the early 2020s, I made a daily four-panel diary comic. For Inktober 2022, I made daily comics about my dad, who died in 2018. I'm thinking about him today and rereading these, so I thought I'd share some.

I did it. My first diary comic in two years. I was waiting in the parking lot for my daughter, and I'd left my phone at home. So I doodled this on some junk mail with the Pilot Petit 1 fountain pen I keep in my wallet. I added color pencil when I got home.

I'm still looking through all the old diary comics I've made. Here's one about meaningful gestures (and #coffee).

Before I read the text of this Mike Luckovich comic, I noticed the similarity of its composition with a panel from a four-panel comic of mine that I made in a Friday Night Comics workshop a few years ago, illustrating some song lyrics we chose.
Of course I chose Townes Van Zandt.

I had a hard time coming up with the name of the photographer who inspired this panel of my comic (for the alt text).

My brain offered Frank Capra, and I know he's the filmmaker. I realized my brain was making a shorthand of Robert Frank & Robert Capa.

A present in the form of a comic?
Happy Birthday, Debbie Harry!

Mekka is right of course. The woman in this old comic of mine from when covid vaccines were being rolled out is not technically my relative, but she is a racist ivermectin sipper.

Even last year when my stepdad was hospitalized w/ covid & was very sick for months, she denied it was real.

I'm still not making daily comics. I'm still rereading my daily comics from the early '20s. Here are two from July five years ago. Life is much harder now.

The good news: my daughter is baking bread, and we have berries with whipped cream for some red, white, and blue.

It's a lovely rainy morning in southern California. Here's a comic I made when I first moved back here. Now that I've been back for several years, the thrill of a rainy day has returned. ☔

Funny, I made this comic about the creepy sexualizing of robots, and now it looks like the last panel was prophetic.

Movies were my dad's love language. Love of movies is a main reason he moved to LA (escaping snow another). "Wall-E" did not live up to his movie-magic hopes for his granddaughters' first theatre experience. They'd watched "Hello Dolly" many times on dvd, though, so this moment was magic to me.
