My hometown finally got the message. I wish the victims of indigenous oppression, erasure, and racism had never been treated this way. Now they need to add indigenous history to school history books.

Not enough true understanding. The word, in and of itself, was never offensive. Perhaps it the context in which it was used that was suggestively offensive. But that can be done to almost every word.
