#Industry-Academia
Let’s stop treating "leaving academia" as negative. Scientists train for academia, industry, or what suits them. Industry isn’t an alternative; it’s a choice. In fields like engineering, most PhDs go to industry, and no one calls it "leaving academia." We should train scientists for diverse paths.

I agree and know about this (it is my job) and high failure rate, but equally if industry let academia wither on the vine, then we all lose, especially industry, who also recruit most of the key staff from academia.

100% solidarity with all trans women either way, but esp allies in industry for what we suffer in academia

Only Hollywood? It's pervasive in every industry, every damned one. CEOs, every form of media, academia, the medical industry, every single place men have control.

I think a lot of this comes from the merger of MAGA and Silicon Valley. The tech industry believes it’s the only place capable of innovation and all the other intellectual centers of America - academia, industry, media, journalism, government - should be abolished and simply bend the knee to tech
Trump and Musk are basically trying to deskill America:
1) kill all white-collar jobs and replace them with AI
2) kill universities
3) use tariffs to turn the U.S. into an economic island manufacturing, oil and ag hub
4) empty the cities
5) push men into manual labor & women back into the kitchen

I'm excited to announce today that the National Quantum Algorithm Center at the IQMP has chosen five recipients for its Grand Challenges Program.

We're supporting researchers working on game-changing quantum applications and fostering collaboration between academia and industry.

WalkScore is a product of the real estate industry, not academia.
this address has a walk score of 86.

I think academia is what happens when you make creative jobs get office jobs and service industry jobs at the same time.

I’ve spent more than a year reporting on how the fossil fuel industry has infiltrated academia over the last 30 years, shaping fundamental paradigms on how to address climate change.

My first story in the new @propublica.org and @drilledmedia.bsky.social series, “Carbon Captured”, is out today.
NEW: This is the story of how one of the most influential climate papers in history came to exist thanks to one of the companies most responsible for causing the climate crisis — and one with a financial stake in the technologies described in the paper.

Beyond Denial: How Oil Execs Shaped a Landmark Climate Study
BP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

non-conservatives at Harvard and other elite universities need to understand that their conservative, Trump-supporting "colleagues" in academia, business and industry are part of a plot to destroy the institutions they work for.
Yikes

Hugely important point!

Industry takes risks in developing drug candidates and then bringing chosen ones into clinical trials.

Academia takes risks in developing students and helping them become more capable of being independent scientists in industry, academia, and other sectors.
@jeremymberg.bsky.social Not to mention, how do they think the people who work in biotech and the private sector were trained?

i think one day we'll wonder why this technology was dangerously rushed into every consumer facing product instead of quietly developed to fruition in academia or industry and the answer will be that the tech CEOs didn't know what to do with it so they asked the chatbot and did whatever it said
Question for my fellow tech/AI/etc reporters here: How often do you get "tips" from people clearly suffering from AI psychosis? Strangers reaching out to tell you they've uncovered something secret and special and technical through an AI. I've had several via Grok. Yesterday my first Gemini.

academia is making plots and figures you care about but no one else does, industry is making ones that you don't care about but other people do
at least the bullshit that you work on for academia is interesting to you and you generally care about your little graphs and tables, even if no one else does

leaving academia for industry
My enemies have cast me into a pit. Little do they know it's quite cozy in here, and it's a bit of a relief to have a break from my responsibilities.

NIH funded academia research is the lifeline and the intelligence source for the whole biotech/pharmaceutical industry. They are literally killing the entire industry.

When academics are talking about academia, they're usually talking about their specific position at a specific kind of institution located in a specific part of the world and their experiences in a specific field. Variation within academia is likely as large as variation btw academia and industry.
ok i have another quote tweet prompt. what's something, big or small, related to your job or hobby, that most people don't know that you would like to have them know? it can be a concept, a piece of history, some vocabulary, or something else.

As a Jew, I would like to thank the Republican Party for protecting me and my people through destroying academia, an industry Jews were never accepted in, nor good at.

"Even the term 'Artificial Intelligence' itself is widely misused, with conceptual unclarity coopted to advance industry agendas ... It is our task to demystify and to challenge 'AI' in our teaching, research and in our engagement with society."

Often academia & industry are presented as opposing forces, but this just isn’t true. Both are part of a synergistic ecosystem that has led US to the forefront of innovation & improved global health.

Grateful to my industry colleagues for speaking out for our entire scientific community.

Run by boards of trustees taken from industry, not academia.

I feel like I have seen, over the last month or two, people in nearly every career talk about how they feel like their industry is collapsing and need to find an out. Like games, yes. But also film, animation, journalism, academia and teaching, sciences, tech. even restaurants and retail.

and like... I think it's good to audit your beliefs periodically

ask yourself: if everyone around you on the left is turning out to be an antisemitic wrecker, how much of your worldview that differs from what's widely accepted in academia, business, and industry comes from antisemitic wreckers?
