Roughly 1/3rd of the way through #InfiniteJest It’s… fine? But I’m getting the impression this is a long form way of #DFW attempting to exhonorate himself from his addictions and behaviors post-rehab more than anything else. It’s been really boring and annoying, frankly. (And not in a meta way.)

I did a talk at the #DavidFosterWallace conference in Gettysburg in 2024. It was about the character of Gerhardt Schtitt in #InfiniteJest. But the question that bugged me was about whether Schtitt's philosophy of tennis was fascist.

Videophone consumers seemed suddenly to realize that they’d been subject to an insidious but wholly marvelous delusion about conventional voice-only telephony. They’d never noticed it before, the delusion— it’s like it was so emotionally complex that it could be countenanced only in the context of its loss. Good old traditional audio-only phone conversations allowed you to presume that the person on the other end was paying complete attention to you while also permitting you not to have to pay anything even close to complete attention to her.
