this vaio has a fun quirk where no linux distro from the last ~15 years can see the cdrom drive after loading into initramfs. which has made imaging this thing a miserable process

I ported frood, my Alpine initramfs NAS (words.filippo.io/frood/) to an Ampere Altra 64-core arm64 board: github.com/FiloSottile/...
After a lot of struggling with gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aport... and Tianocore EFI for qemu, systemd-efistub and ukify just worked.

I successfully got m1n1 to load the kernel and initramfs directly, a config that didn't work out of the box on void. this saves several seconds of boot time as it doesn't have to load u-boot and then grub.

Most important things are in /usr/sbin or in the initramfs, so you can fix that. It is more like deleting the program files on Windows (system32 is more /usr/lib imo)
