The orchid mantis is a clever little impostor! Its flower-like body even reflects ultraviolet light like real blossoms, fooling pollinators with a deception far more sophisticated than simply looking pretty. #nature #biology #insects #flowers

our ivy in the garden is ALIVE with all manner of bees, flies, hornets....... it is such an important source of food for insects especially at this time of year.

Yesterday on fallow land I saw plants that once buzzed with bees & insects before 2000… now silent.
Pesticides didn’t just kill pests. They wiped out the pollinators that keep us alive.
No bees = no food security.
This is environmental terrorism by design.

A garden centre #WeeBee has it made - flowers galore and opening hours beyond human times. This buzzer was certainly making the most of it with bulging pollen sacs.

I received such an affirming piece of info from a neighbor yesterday.
After this 4th year of transforming a weed yard into a pollinator haven, my neighbor said that she is seeing birds in her yard that haven’t been around for years.
Pollinators—seeds—insects—wood piles—vernal ponds = habitat.

Worried sick, so for me it's a 10. Here in Canada I see the yealy decline of pollinators and other insects in my garden. Every summer it gets worse, the sound of the buzzing of bees grows dimmer every year.

Puccinia monoica, the Mustard Flower Rust, parasitizing a Boechera at Betasso Preserve. The rust tricks insects visiting these pseudoflowers into transferring spermatia from one host to another in the same way that pollinators transter pollen between flowers

Nature's good for you, but it can also be immensely dispiriting to care about biodiversity. This is Greenwich Park's Flower Garden. Sept 2025: a lively, varied, stuctured border attracting impressive numbers of pollinators. Oct 2026: all flattened! Because it's not tidy/formal enough? A real shame.

A hover fly I noticed that seemed enamored with a particular flower, so I focused on the flower and waited for its return. If you look closely, you can see its mouth parts moving collecting nectar/pollen. 🪰🌎 #pollinators #bugsky #wildflowers #Eck #inverts #insects #nature #flyday

Though not native to the US (they're Central and South American), marigolds are also great for use in vegetable beds. The unpleasant aroma can help keep digging critters away! Mixed with plants that attract predatory insects because they attract pollinators, you get a lot of integrated pest control.
Marigolds(Tagetes spp.) don't wilt & hold their color for many days, so were used for Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead on Nov. 1 & 2), which was started by the Aztecs, but was synched up with the Christian All Saints Day after the Europeans arrived. greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2022/11/mari...
