Instow was the primary site for testing Allied amphibious equipment (including DUKWs and tanks) before the 1944 D-Day landings. The RM testing unit is still operational today

This line, so important to this part of Devon, was being lifted just to the south. This track, once served by the Atlantic Coast Express, only had days left at this point, possibly hours.

Instow > Bideford. Also headwind despite the fact it is the other direction. Different river, too.
