Interesting that Christians don't see anything wrong with the amount of interbreeding required to populate the entirety of modern humanity from just 8 people.

I wonder how many other species are out there whose odd genetics can chalked up to, two other species who were never meant to reproduce together did anyways and now their offsprings genetics are just left holding the bag. Also was the creation of this species the result of one interbreeding event?

Allopolyploids like this are pretty rare, but it's one of those "how the hell would that even work?" things that sheds light by being an outlier.

I would guess there was a lot of interbreeding, most of it limited in success, and only this very successful little gal made it to present day.

species: a group of interbreeding organisms sharing common characteristics, bound by heritable traits & shared ancestry

Meh

US here (eeweh yuck trumpland 🫢🫣🤢)

So hominids all came out of Africa

We've been migrating ever since we existed. Sometimes interbreeding with other hominids, sometimes bashing them & our own on the head cuz that's how we are, a mixture of competitive & cooperative...hear me out...

Interbreeding is a lot less difficult to believe for this population of 165 million people

If there is a global thermonuclear war people probably won’t that surprised 😳 given it was caused by the Stuarts, Tudors and Zhou dynasty interbreeding 😂!

Unlike plant genetic resources, animal genetic resources have historically moved across borders through centuries of livestock exchange, breeding and interbreeding, making their origins and subsequent utilisation particularly difficult to trace. (1/2)

color combinations, especially with the Gray ones, that make me wonder if interbreeding happens. This video has Gray and one Red, so you can see what I mean. The last one is November in the calendar for next year. #wildlife

🐛 Fall armyworm strains in Burkina Faso are interbreeding. A new study of larvae from maize and sorghum fields finds frequent corn x rice hybrids and high gene flow across agroecological zones.

There are lots of different definitions. Here's the standard textbook definition of a "biological species."

"A group of actually or potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups."

There are lots of other definitions.

Other species concepts are increasingly tested by applying the phylogenetic species concept, which uses both anatomy and DNA evidence to evaluate relationships between populations; genetic study can be used to check other assessments and determine if populations are actually interbreeding (more)

Kind of combines the concepts of interbreeding (the BSD), visual similarity (what people actually care about but is too vibe-y to be a good definition on its own, hence BSD), and how one causes the other.

Doesn't include non-sexually reproducing organisms per se but also hints at the stakes there

i find it weirdly heartening to think of the ancient hominid world not as this regimented system of strict competing species-groups, but this insanely complicated mishmash of diversity and interbreeding, where you might genuinely not even know that another hominid even *IS* different from you

Cool long-form news article on human-Neanderthal hybridization from @ocmaule.bsky.social at LiveScience.

@rajivmccoy.bsky.social great to read you're thinking about asymmetries in hybrid pregnancies!

Neanderthal DNA still survives in our human family tree. What were our ancient relatives' relationships like?
Developing research suggests that ancient interbreeding wasn't random — it was socially patterned, directional and far more complicated than the headlines suggest.
