Poland’s breakthrough at Gdańsk came on Sun. 31-Aug-1980, when Lech Wałęsa and Deputy Premier Mieczysław Jagielski signed accords that met key strike demands and cracked open one-party control. The strikes had surged after Jul. 1980 price hikes and the firing of crane operator Anna Walentynowicz; by mid-Aug., roughly 17,000 workers at the Lenin Shipyard were in a sit-down led by Wałęsa. An Interfactory Strike Committee codified 21 demands — independent unions, the right to strike, release of political prisoners, and freer speech — forcing negotiations the regime feared to resist. Out of the accords, Solidarność formed and rapidly became a mass movement exceeding 10,000,000 members, drawing Western sympathy and provoking anxiety in Moscow. Under Soviet pressure, General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared martial law in late 1981, annulled recognition of Solidarity, and arrested about 6,000 activists, including Wałęsa. The union went underground, buoyed by international backing and U.S. sanctions.
