Much of SF lost power last night. Waymos blocked intersections across the city, even though they are Wayless than 1% of cars on the roads. They accumulated at their failure points--intersections with no green lights, in busy areas, and shut down traffic there.

Permissive left turns across multilane intersections kill. We need smaller intersections, but exclusive turn or ped phasing is needed as a standard for these in cities, and can generally be done in weeks.
This traffic camera image from 2024 shows a woman crossing Robert Street in West St. Paul seconds before she was hit and fatally injured by the driver of the silver 2020 GMC Sierra. The victim had a walk signal and the right-of-way, the driver was not speeding, he just drove right into her.

— Redesigning our most dangerous streets.
— Regulating delivery apps.
— Lowering speed limits where children play.
— Upgrading 1,000 intersections every year.
— Cracking down on dangerous drivers and super speeders.
— Improving our street lights.
— Building safe, beautiful public spaces.

Remember, when Barcelona eliminated 3 lanes of vehicle traffic & converted this street into a 4.7km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid, businesses sued. They actually won. But by decision-time, the businesses had decided they actually like it.

Remember, when Barcelona eliminated 3 lanes of vehicle traffic & converted this street into a 4.7km green pedestrian corridor in the heart of the Eixample grid, businesses sued. They actually won. But by decision-time, the businesses had decided they actually like it.

There are 65 intersections in Calgary with leading pedestrian signals (starts before vehicles get green light) and collisions in those intersections have decreased 35%. 👍
They will now do the rest, but it will take 2 years to complete! 😲
