#Invasibility
Pray for my undergrads, nothing wrong with them but they're learning about pairwise invasibility plots today

In mountains ⛰️ diverse native communities did not resist invasions. Indeed, there seems to be an interplay between native diversity and disturbances that shapes invasibility in mountain ecosystems

Check our new paper in JVS

Thanks @mbuhaly.bsky.social for leading this!
New in Journal of Vegetation Science: Buhaly et al. found no biotic resistance to non-native species at high elevations globally. Diverse native communities there did not resist invasion, and in some cases coincided with more non-natives.

Also, I sold my flash story "Invasibility" to Worlds of Possibility earlier this week. Third short story sale ever, first in over a year. Celebrating with bubble tea.

I don't know how everyone is making their awards eligibility graphics look so nice, because this took me about an hour.
Anyway, here are my awards-eligible stories from 2025.

Since it's Pride month, I'll note that the main character of "Invasibility" is nonbinary. (But, more importantly, a huge advocate of invasive plant mitigation.)

My short story "Invasibility" is out in Version Two of April's Worlds of Possibility issue! The premise: "Wouldn't it be funny if someone was out killing invasive plants in the woods and a space alien rocked up and asked what they were doing?"

First day of our @b-cubed.eu project meeting is over.

Quite a lot of new software products developed based on species occurrence cubes by @gbif.org. The cubes are used eg for SDMs, invasibility cubes and to calculate a set of indicators of biodiversity change.

Soon all online and as #R packages.

Also! When I throw the predator/prey (Lotka–Volterra) equation on a talk slide, I question whether 1970s ecology is really a great inspiration. L-V lives on in 2026 Nature papers!

My work focuses on understanding how evolution alters 1) the invasiveness or virulence of populations 2) the susceptibility or resistance of communities to invaders (ie invasibility). I use a combination of controlled experiments and observational studies to isolate and quantify evolution's impact.
