MANILA, Philippines – The team set up nine camera traps in the forests of Mindoro last August. They determined the locations of the camera traps based on knowledge of the Mindoro bleeding-heart’s habitat, behavior, and as well as what the Iraya Mangyan knew about the endemic bird’s previous whereabouts. “We combined historical data and then the biophysical and bioclimatic layers of Mindoro Island to create a [species distribution] model,” John Bibar, a researcher from the Center for Conservation Innovation (CCIPH) who was part of the field team, explained. “When we got the result and zoomed in, the area was an ancestral domain in the northern part,” Bibar said. Bibar and the rest of the team spent around two days scouring the forests of Mindoro to install the camera traps. They conducted transect walks and used bioacoustic devices. On the last day of their week-long fieldwork, the team, composed of Manila-based conservationists and Iraya Mangyan patrollers, checked the recorded footage. They had moderate hopes. Before sunrise, Bernito Pampilo shoulders a backpack carrying a mobile phone, flashlight and enough food — he hopes — for a day’s patrol through the forests of Puerto Galera in northern Mindoro, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of Manila. By around 6 a.m., the 56-year-old Iraya Mangyan patroller and two companions leave their mountain outpost in Aninuan village after praying to Apo Iraya, the creator, for protection. Their route crosses rivers, steep ridges, dense vegetation and deep natural holes known locally as balahaw. “If you walk too quickly, sometimes you won’t see the hole,” Pampilo told Mongabay. “If you fall into it, you could die.” Some patrols continue into the night, forcing the team to cross rivers and climb ridges by flashlight. Mobile apps point them toward assigned coordinates, but not toward the safest path. The forest lies within the 14,661-hectare (36,228-acre) Puerto Galera Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 1977. For Pampilo, the work is more than a job. It is part of an effort to protect forests his community has depended on for generations while testing whether an international climate mechanism can deliver lasting Indigenous benefits. Only birdsong breaks the silence as towering trees sway overhead. A clear stream tumbles across the trail over smooth rocks. Ahead walks 43-year-old Lenito Pampilo. Every few steps, he stops — not because the climb is difficult, but because the forest is speaking, he says. He points to an unseen bird in the canopy. Another answers from farther uphill. For him, each call carries meaning. “Our elders taught us these birds,” he tells Mongabay. Pampilo, an Iraya community leader and ecotrail guide, has spent much of his life in these mountains. His knowledge goes beyond recognizing species. “Some birds signal changing weather, warn of danger or carry messages between the living and spirit worlds,” he says. “Trees, streams and ridges also hold stories passed from one generation to the next.” For the Iraya, the forest is a largely unwritten living archive.
