I got off at the wrong bus stop in Bundoran and wandered into a pub that wasn't even open.
The owner, Arón Neilis, poured me a Guinness and later gave me a lift to my hostel.
He then told me his story.
Seven days later, I'd found a real-life character for The Donegal Cipher.

did you know: Máiréad Ní Ghráda's 1940 Irish-language science fiction novel Manannán, which features a giant humanoid mech piloted by humans riding inside it, is one of the first non-Japanese examples of a prototypical mecha (only 9 years after the debut of the earliest, Ōgon Bat 黄金バット, in 1931)?

Dublin, 1943. A mother waits, a bundle of letters tied with ribbon. Her son left for Burma – first a tea plantation, then war.

The Mending Room: a novel of letters and longing. Coming Jan 2027. 📮

Neill Tully called in with his debut novel The Visit - New Ross, 1963 - a Garda sergeant, a young man on the edge & JFK's historic visit looming over everything. Colm Tóibín called it 'brilliant and intriguing'. @eriu_books.bsky.social @gillhessltd #TheVisit #NeillTully #IrishFiction #APIBA
