On 6 January, the remainder of the squadron was again detailed for a raid off Libya, shipping near Buerat. One A/C returned early due to engine trouble. The other three requested directions on their return and then vanished with their crews. They had run into JG53 Bf109s and all were shot down.

Never was able to ask my grandfather (from my dad's side) about his experiences during the war (LwQMSgt in a Grp of JG53). He died when I was 16 (he was born in 1915); despite my early interst in #MilHist as a teenager, we never discussed it. My mum 'n dad were born in 1947.
