On 10 September, JNIM launched a large-scale attack on an isolated military base in Dioura, killing at least 120 soldiers and capturing around 100 more - these numbers are horrific! theafricainsight.substack.com/p/the-sub-sa...

Relatedly the people saying "who even hears about Al Qaeda anymore" because they've never heard about JNIM and they don't care because JNIM mostly just kills people in Mali.

Why is IS afraid of JNIM taking over Mali? Do u JNIM as more competent than the Junta?
September 30, 2026 at 2:14 PM
Hence while we have separate battles of massive proportions in Mali, multiple attacks in Burkina Faso or a few in Benin, simultaenously, JNIM has to defend itself from Islamic State crossing rivers in order to now allow al-Qaeda any bigger achievement than it already has.

I cover the recent Central Mali campaign by JNIM and what to make of that. As suggested also in thread below, it's another stage in a series that can be traced to the coups in 2022-2023. Russia and Mali are in trouble. fronts.co/article/mali...

But at the end of the day, it's really JNIM that is stuck here. Between the final win that may spell doom once Black flags terrorize their backline or to wait another few years. Years, again, I am not sure they have. Technology is quickly making its way to the Sahel.

The cake has largely been split at this point. What's left is to see, whether some part crumbless and one group comes ahead of the other. JNIM is also trying to make life difficult for IS, the group visited Niger's capital's military airport this June to show IS they also can...

Rumors are quite something and difficult to make sense of them, however, it’s certain some battles in Mali and Burkina Faso have happened these past few weeks between JNIM and IS. Whenever JNIM attacks in Mali and Burkina, IS is testing the backline. Hundreds of JNIM...

And, it seems it's an understatement and jihadists from IS Sahel will be that final Bamako regime defence - much to the chagrin of JNIM and FLA who already see that moment of bliss awaiting them, literally by arms lenght. But not enough. Islamic State is waiting for mistakes.
September 29, 2026 at 11:55 PM
Well, they would have at least. Because Islamic State is not happy with what is happening in Mali. And is visibly making arrangements to prevent a very threatening outcome the fall of Mali to JNIM would be.
So they are stabbing them in the back as we speak.

If not for the combination of luck and succesful defence of Bamako airport back then. Brutal assessment? Never heard of it? Well, that's the honest reality. People never believed me when I said they were soon going for cities. It happened this year. They also underestimated JNIM.

So, JNIM has another masses it can use to make new demands. Demands that over and over again successfuly entrench their shadow grip. Shadow that is no longer really a shadow ever since Kidal is in JNIM and FLA hands. And what is happening in central Mali proves it...

Why Niger, if we are talking about Russian quagmire in Mali? Because it's interconnected. JNIM (in a very short summary) is now trying to annihilate Mali's and Russian influence in the central Mali - they squashed the Dozos, massacred military camps...

Niger is in panic - not only the Islamic State is on the visible rise everywhere, they also got a huge amount of $ for American and European hostages released recently. How much? We don't know. But certainly massive. Not the scale of UAE prince JNIM kidnapped, but of note still.
