It has not been a good time for women in India. But then, it rarely ever is. The similarities between the recent incidents in Bihar’s Jamui and Delhi are startling. In both instances, a group of men attacked and sexually assaulted a girl and her male friend who were doing perfectly ordinary things: travelling together on the back of a scooter; celebrating a birthday in a public park. Both girls are minors. The most striking similarity, though, is that in both instances, the men were able to intimidate their victims with the threat of revealing some apparent wrongdoing. In Jamui, the men asked the two young people whether they were classmates and if their families were aware of their ‘relationship’. In Delhi, the police said that the accused used ‘legal terminology’ to intimidate the victims, telling them that they stood to face a case. The attackers also posed as policemen and ‘threatened to inform their parents’. Whether or not the girls were in relationships with their friends, as the attackers insinuated, is inconsequential.
