Tuesday Riddell is keeping the endangered skill of japanning alive. Her work captures whimsical moments within the natural world that usually hidden after it goes dark!

Yesterday's Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) featured a special article on Japanese lacquer art.
I was relieved to see that 'japanning' was also explained as meaning 'imitation lacquerware.'

If you want to see my PhD subject at its finest, the property's vast array of cabinets - Dutch Atlantic world ivory and ebony, Japanese nanban lacquer, hybrids of Chinese kuan cai and European japanning - will be opened for a rare yearly glimpse into their interiors in October 👇

Japanning was mostly a US and European surface treatment for metals though, due to our lack of access to urushi and unfamiliarity with the relevant technology

Japan gonna lacquer (which is way, way better in case anyone wonders)

Significant research results on urushi were published in Japan. They chemically elucidated why black urushi has such a deep black color through neutron beam analysis.
This is also connected to the origin of the terms 'japanning' and 'japanned.

Japanese lacquerware was accepted overseas in two periods: the 1600s and the 1800s, coinciding with Japan opening its borders. The term "japanning" originated in the 1600s, referring to a technique that imitated black lacquer.

Japanning is a very common term among hand tool woodworkers. English and American hand planes typically had japanning and when offered for sale these days, sellers often indicate how much of it remains on the plane.

Japanning originated from a desire to imitate the black and gold colors of urushi, so it seems to be a simulated technique different from authentic lacquerware. Japanning does not contain urushi.

Researching the usage examples of "japan" and "japanning" is becoming somewhat of a lifework for me😅

Thank you. As you mentioned, the original use of "japanning" seems to be related to black imitation urushi lacquer decorated with gold.

I continue to gather information on whether urushi-lacquer and lacquerware are still referred to as "japan."
If you have any episodes or examples regarding japanning or japanned, please let me know.
English native speakers: Have you ever heard the word "japan" used with meanings other than "Japan," specifically referring to "lacquer" or "lacquerware"?
Or do you actually use it in that context?

The black scissors are not japanning, but ordinary urushi-lacquered scissors. The scissors below are called "Kawarinuri" and are made of various colors of urushi, painted in layers and polished. These scissors are a collaboration with jowell, a world-class beauty scissors manufacturer in Japan.

Jukes listed his occupation as a 'Japanner' ('japanning' is a European imitation of East Asian lacquerwork), which is interesting, but not as interesting as Thomas Dugdale of Dirty Lane, Southwark, who described himself as ... 'Horse Boiler'.

Interesting! I have heard the term Japan/Japanning in reference to lacquer/ing but it is an older term that isn’t in common use (in the US, cannot speak for other english speaking countries). I didn’t realise it was referring to Urushi (?) specifically.
