#Japanning
Well, basically, if I heard an older person use eg: "Japanning" I would wonder whether they were using an old phrase out of habit or they were using an old phrase because they didn't like Japan & were being sort of racist about it.

There are still elderly who were kids during WWII so it can be hard

Japan always be Japanning

(I see autocarrot changed "japanned," the application of a thick, black self-leveling ancestor of enamel paint, to "japanese," because it was programmed by people with teeny-tiny vocabularies. "Japanning" imitates the appearance of black laquerware first imported from Japan in the 19th Century.)

The japanning experiments have begun, first was a failure which was just mixing equal parts shellac and boiled linseed oil and with one part lamp black, basically 10:1. Second attempt was the same mix but heating it up to near boiling to get the two to mix better and I'll see how it looks tomorrow.

As soon as I can find a decent source of lamp black I want to try and experiment with Japanning the outer parts of my tinware to help prolong the lifespan. Not sure if I want to try and paint something on them afterwards or just leave them plain

and yet he made massive changes and produced different models because that’s what people asked for. the only thing he didn’t change was the colors offered for the early cars, Japanning only comes in black,

If I see "japan" or "japanning" in a text I'm reading, I check the publication date, and the setting of the story/prose, because that particular usage was already old-fashioned in my teens (in the 70s).

During the Victorian era, the craft of 'japanning' meant to use lacquer as a decorative covering. So British people would talk about a 'japanned box'. Could that be the origin of that explanation?

It was a 19th century term, though. It's not used that way anymore, as you say.

On the paint job - is that “japanning” or good old paint? I just started watching that Canadian feller with the plaid shirt doing restorations and he got into japanning, I thought it was pretty cool.

put up by other channels that are more often restomods rather than true restoration (in the conservation sense), where they do things like use modern painting techniques (e.g. powder coating) and file off original casting marks, while he does things like casting in metal bearings and Japanning

Japanning, and in Tokyo for the week.

Watched Midnight Mass on the plane ride and that was so good. If you haven't already seen it then go give it a watch. I love Hamish Linklater.
