I thought that in late medieval and early modern times (1400-1600 CE or so) there was a significant divergence, and that women in Britain and the Low Countries married significantly later than in places like Italy. That Italian women were often married in their late teens, Britain/Netherlands 26+.

The taxes collected, in total, would have to be much larger than the current cost of daycare.

Not "the tax increase on a person would be larger than the current cost of daycare for a parent who uses daycare."

From Wilson's introduction to her translation of The Iliad has always stopped me in my tracks (particularly listening to Audra McDonald narrate it):
