As an aside, #JohnDiefenbaker lost 5 elections before he was finally elected as a Conservative MP in 1940. He went on to serve in Parliament for 39 years and as prime minister for 6 years (1957-1963).

When a U.S. president (JFK) tried to dominate Canada in the 1960s a Canadian prime minister (#JohnDiefenbaker)fought back. On my @ricochetmedia.bsky.social podcast “In Bed with the Elephant” an interview w/ historian Bob Plamondon about his new book about “Dief.”

There's an argument to be made that the most progressive CDN prime minister of the 20th century was a Conservative, #JohnDiefenbaker. Diefenbaker was born into poverty. He was an "enemy of injustice & discrimination." He identified w/ the downtrodden. He despised "elites."

My great uncle, Ralph Budd, was a porter on CDN trains in the 1940s & 1950s. He once told me that #JohnDiefenbaker was one of the few White folks who treated Black porters w/ respect. Whereas most passengers called every Black porter "George," Dief called them by their names.

#JohnDiefenbaker was a "Man of the People." Perhaps more than any Prime Minister in CDN history he identified w/ the underdog. On the next episode of my @ricochet_en podcast I'll speak to #BobPlamondon about "FREEDOM FIGHTER" his new book about Dief.

I predict that #pierrepoilievre will mention #johndiefenbaker at least once during his big Friday speech.

Looking forward to it.

#johndiefenbaker in 1967:
"Macdonald and Cartier agreed in the British monarchical system."
"They opposed republicanism and what they called American domination."
"They decided to build a Canada here. First, foremost, and always."
"I say in this Canada, one and undivided, a Canadian I was born […]
