Photographer Kristie Kohn says

"While I was trying to photograph the Northern Lights in the wee hours of the morning, my cat decided to photobomb the picture. Since I had the camera’s shutter speed maxed out, it ended up leaving a sort of ghostly image of my cat in the photo."
Photographer Kristie Kohn's 2024 aurora photo was photobombed by a ghostly image of her cat. The photo shows stars, above red and then bright green aurora, and the cat shadow, looking right, is in the bottom third of the photo, with the aurora appearing to go right through her

Beware the Yule Cat! In Icelandic folklore, Jólakötturinn, is a giant cat who prowls the longest winter nights, hunting those who didn’t receive new clothes before Christmas. So… here’s hoping socks are under the tree. 🧦🐈‍⬛ Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!

In Icelandic folklore Jólakötturinn, the Yule Cat, comes to eat those who do not wear their new clothes for Christmas. In this image, you can see somebody did not put on their new Christmas sweater. Or perhaps even more unfortunately, no one got them one!

Jólakötturinn is huge, as big as if not bigger than a house, and only comes around for Christmas. Some say Jólakötturr (as sometimes shortened) is the pet of the a family of trolls known as the Yule Lads who are Santa’s helpers in Iceland. It’s also said that he has a particular taste for ungrateful children. The legend of the Jólakötturinn was not written down for publishing until the early 19th century. At first a more obscure countryside myth, the lore of Yule Cat has only grown since and is now internationally known and celebrated. It is theorized the practical purpose of this myth may have been to aid in wool production in earlier seasons of the year which children took part in helping with. ❄️❄️ ❄️❄️❄️

are you wearing your new socks so Jólakötturinn doesn't eat you
The evil Christmas cat (Jólakötturinn in Icelandic) is the pet of the troll witch Grýla. She is used to threaten naughty children, because she loves to eat them. Grýla's sons are the Jólasveinar, the thirteen Icelandic Santa Clauses, dwarves who originally did not bring gifts, but stole things or played pranks. They are on the move between December 12 and January 6. The day of the Jólakötturinn is December 24. This is when the hungry Christmas cat roams around to steal and eat naughty, lazy children. Only those who wear new clothes, especially new socks, on Christmas Eve are spared. New clothes were a sign that someone had not been lazy, but had spun all the wool from the sheep before winter and made it into clothing. This was important for surviving the cold winters on the inhospitable island. The story of Jólakötturinn should therefore be understood as an invitation to be diligent and to prepare for winter in good time.

Happy holidays from Jólakötturinn, the Icelandic fairytale cat who eats you on Christmas morning if your clothes aren't nice! Nope, he's not a moral lesson about keeping your clothes clean. He's just a reminder of the ever-present potential for senseless violence in an unpredictable universe! Skål!

Forget Santa. In Iceland, the Yule Cat judges your outfit 🎅🏼

Jólakötturinn is said to roam snowy fields at Christmas, devouring anyone who hasn’t received new clothes before Christmas Eve. 🧵⬇️ (1/3)
A majestic black cat with glowing yellow eyes in a snowy, twilight forest scene. Text says: Ready fur holiday horror? Jólakötturinn, or the Yule cat, prowls the countryside at Christmas and punishes those who don't get new clothes before Christmas Eve.
