On June 4, 1989, the Chinese government violently cracked down on pro-democracy demonstrators at Tiananmen Square in the nation’s capital city of Beijing.

In China, for much of the 1980s, Hu Yaobang served as the country’s head of state. And he tolerated pro-democracy writing and demonstrations inside China. During Hu’s tenure, more people became more comfortable with voicing their dissatisfaction with China’s communist party rule. This was a key reason Hu was forced out as General Secretary. Still, pro-democracy ranks grew, believing they could push the government for freedom of speech and freedom of the press. They also wanted a more accountable government and an end to one-party rule. These were the issues that brought around a million people to Tiananmen Square. The Chinese military’s violent suppression of the demonstrations killed thousands. Since 1989, other, pro-democracy movements have risen in China, but all have been suppressed by the government.
