The kōwhai is a native tree of New Zealand and is an unofficial national flower.
Native birds such as the tui, bellbird, kākā and New Zealand pigeon/kererū/kūkū/kūkupa all benefit from kōwhai.

The picture on the label doesn't look much like a Kūkupa but they got the over indulgence bit right. 🪶

Kererū / kūkū / kūkupa: New Zealand pigeon. The kererū is a large bird with irridescent green and bronze feathers on its head and a smart white vest. The noisy beat of its wings is a distinctive sound in our forests.

Kūkupa, the chonky wood pigeon that flies like a drunken bomber.
Regular visitors to the puka tree that shades my writing hut.

Konini Road leading up to Scenic Drive is alive with kererū / kūkūpa doing spectacular display climbs and dives 🥰

I'm less familiar with the kererū's alias, kūkupa, and I totally wouldn't have recognised it from the e-fit on this label 😁 but I would have bought it for the label nonetheless!

Today we enjoyed seeing
The longest curved timber rail bridge in the southern hemisphere
1880 brick and glazed pipe culverts
Early 20th century telephone poles made from railway hardware
A big fat kukupa
The inside of my lungs after taking a face full of tobacco weed or privet pollen on the way back

This kukupa/kererū has become a regular visitor in our garden of late. Question is, will they hang around to be counted in the #nzgardenbirdsurvey or will they be like the kōtare and show up either side of the counting?

New Zealand wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) is known as kererū (indigenous name) to NZers, or in Northland as kūkū or kūkupa (alternative indigenous names).

Our kitchen window opens to the deck, and the canopy of an awesome pūriri. This guy was going to town on the berries when i made the coffee this morning.

I agree entirely! Except they’re called kūkupa!
