#K12
in k12, there's a turn in some circles to redefining teaching as coaching or facilitating without being expected to actually know or teach anything in particular, it's supposed to be warm and fuzzy, but not allowing for sloppy thinking and indoctrination is also an expression of care
In the future, professors will be judged not by output but by their ability to care and nurture

This will be deeply unpopular in some quarters
And where will new professors come from without RAs. But clearly our institutions consider professors a nuisance and find this development a welcome excuse to stop pretending to care about that

Sorry, professor-student solidarity, but solidarity between professors and K12 teachers is also great and very much needed, too!

For this, I receive a stupidly low salary to tell the truth about US history to students who've never gotten to hear it in their K12 class.

Our school recently *doubled* the amount of bike racks. It’s amazing that they are already getting used up. (Note that it’s the day before Election Day and no k12 schools today. So u expect fewer people coming to school)

Here's my favorite BLIS K12 lozenge. Mars Wellness with 4 billion units of streptococcus salivarius per lozenge, and it is shelf stable, (unlike Now brand, which fuses into a lump when left at room temperature.)

Best case? Less chance of covid. Worst case? Fresh breath, better overall oral health.

Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.
"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt."

Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn?

MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

Yes. And it is a real problem for higher ed if it becomes not just disincentivized but a liability for K12 teachers to know anything about "content" beyond what's scripted or what's available through ChatGPT.

Let me share my Covid mitigations:

Vaccinated (obviously)
N95 respirator in public @flomask.bsky.social
BLIS K12 lozenges every night
Azelastine nasal spray

Here's data supporting the last two:

Study: Nasal spray containing azelastine reduces risk of coronavirus infection by two-thirds
A research team at Saarland University has demonstrated in a clinical study that a widely used anti-allergy nasal spray containing the active ingredient azelastine can significantly reduce the risk of...

higher ed is downstream of k12, not just for students, but for reformers

While Western cities like New York ban generative AI in primary schools, the UAE has become the first country to mandate AI literacy for K-12 students as young as seven. https://restofworld.org/2026/uae-mandates-k12-ai-education-schools/?utm_campaign=row-social&utm_source=bluesky

During my time in K12, my school district switched schedules around so that elementary kids started early and middle schoolers started late, but the issue they discussed the most before the change was the timing for high school sports, which is sacrosanct in the U.S.

I do think it’s interesting that the Bennett hypothesis seems much more applicable to K12 tuition

In K12, there's tremendous interest among the profiteers in peddling "great books" courses for "cultural literacy" that are really just the same old standardized, scripted test prep. The books are not the problem in that model.

Oh do tell me everything about the Economist’s K12 research data, I am all ears.

I think I get your take — it’s about enabling abusiveness in K12…?

And it’s a very complicated situation

Also, there are no concrete policy guidelines on AI use in k12 ed. When I student-taught 3rd. grade last year, I experimented with AI, as my host school didn’t have any framework. I was literally told to do as I saw fit. I had ChatGPT design one ELA and one math lesson. They were entirely unfit.

Yeah, usually for me it’s online and you have to provide an email address for proof, so I know they’re explicitly including us. If it was something more K12 oriented like a craft store I wouldn’t
