Excerpt of Canis sine domino chapter 11: "After what feels like forever, footsteps return. Henry swallows thickly, hearing but not understanding the voices rising around him, and he wonders if he’s gonna get hit again. If they didn’t have enough, or if those are new tormentors. The bag is ripped away from his head, and even in the low luminosity of the single torch one of them is holding, Henry has to close his eyes to shield them from the sudden light. “Henry! Goodness gracious, what have they done to you?” A cough escapes him as he tries to instinctively answer before he realises who is standing next to him. His lashes flutter as he raises his head slowly, his breath a hiss every time he inhales and feels his ribs burn. Then, before Henry can answer, the man addresses someone else, hissing above his shoulder: “What have you done?!” At last, his vision clears up. Right next to him is Hans, still bloodied and his forehead bandaged up, icy fear shining in his eyes that turned ochre under the firelight. His hands hover in the air, certainly cataloguing the constellation of bruises scattered around his battered body. Behind him, Zizka seems lost in a daze, his face closed off as he observes Henry’s maimed body. Hans’ cry of outrage brings him back to earth, but his surprise quickly turns to exasperation. “Me? I’ve been losing sleep as I waited for my scouts to come back and tell me whether an army will be at our doorstep when the sun rises, sir,” he seethes back, before he orders the guard to untie Henry."

Excerpt from Canis sine domino chapter 10, that reads: "He’s about to finally turn around and raise his voice to formally ask if the other man is open to a serious chat, when the rope tied up to Chestnut’s saddle suddenly slackens and drops, followed by a small thump on the grass. Henry turns around, his eyebrows knitted in confusion. Hans is now staring at him, but his eyes are wide and unblinking, his face pale as he softly tugs on Inky’s reins and makes her take a few steps back, until there’s a good two meters between him and Henry. His eyes drop down to the grass, where the rope now rests. Hans’ waist is untied. And he’s on horseback while Henry is on the ground. His head jerks back up, to Hans and the guilt that is now clearly painted all over his expression. Henry, in the meantime, feels his brain come to a stuttered stop. None of it seems to make sense. Surely it isn’t what it looks like. “Hans…?” he mutters, hope still beating steadily in his veins. That Hans will break into a mischievous smile and drop down from his saddle. That he’ll tease Henry for falling for it so easily. There is absolutely no mischief coming from Hans’ voice as he says, his chin high but his lips hesitating over the words: “I’m sorry, Henry.
