Excerpt from Canis sine domino chapter 13: The familiar smell of leather helps him break through the dizziness of his restless dreams. His lashes flutter, stuck together, his eyes crusty, his sight blurry. But he sees a silhouette. And through the weight of his exhaustion, of the blaring pain that runs through his entire body and seems to have his skull crushed under rocks—he manages to murmur: “Sir… You’re back.” The hand keeps stroking the side of his face. The seam of the glove grazes his burning skin, which erupts in goosebumps. His breath stutters. Then, through the buzzing in his ears, he hears: “Sssh. I am. You’re alright, boy. Peace.” He closes his eyes. He is not alright. He hurts. His head throbs, like it’s going to burst open. Something in his guts tells him that something’s terribly wrong. That he should be worried—he should be on his feet, he should be fighting. He can’t stay like this. He has to go back. But Istvan’s hand keeps stroking his cheek, his ear, his hair. And his voice, low and smooth, forces him back under: “You can rest now. You’ve done enough. I’m here, and you’re safe, Henry.” Henry manages a small nod before he passes out again.

Right next to him is Hans, still bloodied and his forehead bandaged up, icy fear shining in his eyes that turned ochre under the firelight. His hands hover in the air, certainly cataloguing the constellation of bruises scattered around his battered body. Behind him, Zizka seems lost in a daze, his face closed off as he observes Henry’s maimed body. Hans’ cry of outrage brings him back to earth, but his surprise quickly turns to exasperation. “Me? I’ve been losing sleep as I waited for my scouts to come back and tell me whether an army will be at our doorstep when the sun rises, sir,” he seethes back, before he orders the guard to untie Henry."
