In 1987, Japan's Kamiokande detector detected 11 neutrinos in 13 seconds from an exploding star in another galaxy. Just minutes earlier it was offline for routine maintenance, but came back online (by accident) just in time to accidentally capture the burst.

Cherenkov radiation, apparently. In very, very small amounts. That picture looks like the one that Super-Kamikande generated; see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super-K... and strangepaths.com/the-sun-seen...

I was watching a thing about Super-Kamiokande yesterday & it broke my brain a little 😁 What they’ve achieved with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is amazing. Well deserved winners 😃

Not a dumb question at all. Neutrinos interacts extremely rarely with the atoms of matter. The detection strategy is therefore to boost this by putting A LARGE NUMBER of atoms in their way - in this case, 50,000 tonnes of water at SuperKamiokande in Japan www-sk.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/sk/

This picture is taken at Super-Kamiokande. Neutrinos occasionally eject a particle, e.g. an electron from an atom. If this electron is faster than light in the medium (water), then electrons emit Cherenkov light that can be detected with photomultipliers. We detect neutrinos indirectly this way.

The Hyper Kamiokande has the most cyberpunk name ever. Excited to hear of first light in 2027. Go Japan!

In honour of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand.

Kamiokande saw 10^38 neutrinos.

(In fairness there’d be no one left to utter the sentence…)

TIL two cool things about the Super Kamiokande facility (a massive neutrino detector in Japan):

1) There's a live feed available¹.
2) It failed catastrophically in 2001 when a single 50cm diameter vacuum tube imploded. A chain reaction took out 6,600 of the 11,000+ tubes.

For more than 20 years, my collaborators and I have been working towards a first detection of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) --- the faint glow of neutrinos from all past core collapses throughout the universe. Super-Kamiokande now sees a 2.6sigma indication of detecting this.

The Super-Kamiokande in Japan: a massive underground neutrino detector lined with 11,000 golden bulbs. Scientists have to inspect it via a rubber dinghy.
