I was reading Sanpei Shirato's The Legend of Kamui: Perfect Collection volume 1 earlier. (lettering by Stan Sakai!) Kamuiden is good similar to how Conan comics are good. If I had a bookstore, Sanpei Shirato and John Buscema go on the same shelf. Strong style comics, hard hits and great melancholies

Yo guess what I got from The Golden Apple Comics Comic Book Shop Yesterday. Volume 1 Of The Omnibus Of The 1964 Ninja Manga Series Kamui Den aka Legend Of Kamui created By Shirato Sanpei.

Allowed to engage only in a limited number of trades, they could have become the Burakumin of the 20th century. Kamui, born an outsider, he becomes a ninja. And the peasants – in Kamuiden, they were rising against the oppressive taxation of the feudal lords.

what I thought of was “Kamuiden” by Shirato Sanpei – the only manga my father, historian and author, kept a copy of in his study. It was set in the feudal Japan, in the northern farming village, like the one my father was born in.
