Ella Maillart (1903–1997) arriving with rucksacks on her back at Tourtkoul (Turtkul), then-capital of the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic within Soviet Uzbekistan. She arrived by horse, trekking across the Kizil Kum desert, which was part of her broader exploration "from the Tien Shan to the Kizil Kum". Her journey was documented in her book Turkestan Solo (first published in 1934), detailing her journey from Samarkand to the red sands of the desert.

No clue? Most or all turkic languages seem to have a persian influence to some degree but uzbek is the only one I know of with this switch. Though it probably applies to karakalpak as well but I have no idea of a single karakalpak word

Tajik could be it?

Increasingly, the machines best us in this way across nearly every subject. Yes, you will hear the true erudites explain that DeepSeek can't reliably distinguish Karakalpak from adjacent Kipchak-Nogai dialects (or whatever the case may be). This feels to me like pointing at daisies along the train tracks as an actual locomotive screams up from behind.

Since there was interest in these lovely and strange trunk-nosed antelope, I thought I'd share my short comic about them (+ colonialiam and exploitation) Saiga of the Steppes. Don't worry there's a good ending 💚

Main Character (Narration): “You and I are the keeper of the steppes,” said he. Panel 5 In this wide panel in the dream style, we see the main character, an old Qaraqalpaq lady, facing the saiga elder at the now dessicated shore of the Aral Sea. She is a fit senior and, like the intrepid saiga, is used to a life of work on the steppes. She wears a colourful headscarf and a mixture of traditional and western clothing. She kneels and stretches out hands grasping sand, pleading with the saiga. Behind them, the shape of large rusted ships and other structures lie fallen in the mist. Though it is an ecological disaster, still the steppes and the dry lake bed are beautiful. It’s a flat expanse with a range of colours playing on the eyes showing the depth of the horizon. Main Character: I want to believe you! But people with power have wrecked our bodies and our lands. Look at what once was our sea… Saiga: And yet we are still here. Saiga of the Steppes PAGE 2 Panel 1 Continuing in the dream style, the main character is in anguish, her brows furrowed in pain at the thought of the destruction she has seen. Main Character: And now after the engineers plowed bare the steppes, we live among oil explorers who rend it with fences and pipeline. Though I am here, I am powerless... Panel 2 Close up on the saiga in the dream style, wind pulling at his mane as he watches thoughtfully and silently. Panel 3 He turns away. Saiga: I have walked these lands since the age of glaciers, and yet I remain. Panel 4 The embroidery Qaraqalpaq symbology for saiga springs behind him in the air giving him a sort of holy look. Saiga: We have something they cannot take away. Panel 5 He steps in the dream style but embroidery springs forth in hopeful patterns at his hoofs. Saiga: We have in us the power of rebirth. Main Character: But how? Panel 6 Now we are in the real world, the style décor falls away to be a modern and clean style. Under the main character’s fingertips, we see that she has captured the likeness of the saiga footprint on an embroidered bit of cloth. Traditionally this symbol warded off evil and brought good luck. Main Character: “Spin our story on thread and cloth...” Saiga of the Steppes PAGE 3 Panel 1 In this wide panel, the main character is at a market stall showing embroidered bags and small crafts she has made on display at her table while other vendors nearby sell food and wares. Her daughter looks at a phone seemingly annoyed while her two young grandchildren look on with awe, leaning on her table with curiosity. Baina, the younger is energetic and eager, Elya, the older, is thoughtful. Äje means grandmother in Kazakh. The main character holds up one of her sashes to point out the symbol that means saiga as she explains the dream. Main Character: “As your mother did before you,” he said. Baina: Wow Äje, so that’s why you’ve been making all these bags and sashes! Main Character (Narration): We are at my new stall at Central Market in Nukus, Uzbekistan. Panel 2 The kids look up at her in amazement. Around her, some traditional embroidery patterns make visual her inspiration and hope. Elya: A saiga antelope told you to! Baina: A dream saiga! Main Character (Narration): I’m lucky my grandchildren are open to the old ways. Panel 3 The Main Character’s daughter looks annoyed. Mom: Mom you’re filling their heads with nonsense! Main Character (Narration): Because I raised my daughter with too much scepticism. Panel 4 The mother scrunches up her nose at the craft table and makes air quotes while the grandmother looks up at her sadly. Mom: What does “the power of rebirth” even mean? It’s all just fairy tales! Main Character (Narration): It’s true that as a child she saw our proud sea turn to desert then later in life she saw two-thirds of the saiga population die in a season. Panel 5 Close up on the main character whose brow furrows with the pain of those years by when the hardship for human and animal alike were a central part of their existence. Her daughter holds a bit of embroidery unconvincingly in her free hand. Main Character (Narration): Their bodies littered the fallen lands back then and it broke her heart.
