#Khatyn
March 22, 1943: In the Khatyn massacre, 4 Nazi officers had been killed by Partisans so the SS (of course it was the SS) burned down Khatyn village in Belarus and killed 156 of the village's population. This gives a hint of why the Soviets lost over 20 million in the war

"Ci sono città e villaggi completamente distrutti, tutto è stato raso al suolo, restano solo i camini, come nel memoriale di Khatyn in Bielorussia."
Il corrispondente di guerra Alexander Kots ha descritto i "nuovi territori" che Putin sta conquistando a caro prezzo da quattro anni.

I toured the fortress and town of Terezín, north of Prague, with Jáchym Topol, to understand the setting of the first half of his novel Chladnou zemí, for my translation, The Devil's Workshop. Unfortunately I was not able to visit Minsk and Khatyn in Belarus, where the second half takes place.

🕯️ In 1943, Nazi troops killed around 7,000 civilians in Koriukivka, in the Chernihiv region – more than in Lidice, Oradour-sur-Glane, and Khatyn combined.

The Koriukivka Massacre was the largest punitive action against civilians in all of Nazi-occupied Europe.

Revealing the Lost: The WWII Tragedy of Belarusian Villages
The post discusses the systematic destruction of Belarusian villages by Nazi forces during World War II, highlighting Khatyn as a symbol of this atrocity. Despite the immense civilian suffering, such narratives are often overshadowed in historical accounts. The importance of remembering these stories is emphasized to ensure the voices of the victims are not forgotten.

This is Hans Woellke. He won the gold medal in shot put at the 1936 Olympics...and then went on command a company in Schutzmannschaft 118, committing mass war crimes on the Eastern Front.

Until he was killed by partisans, sparking the Khatyn Massacre in March 1943.

Absolutely. The novel it comes from, KHATYN, is also awesome.
It's the back of the house bit that scarred me first time I saw it

"Come and See" takes place in a fairly specific place and the barn scene is based on a famous actual event in the village of Khatyn. As a Soviet-raised Jew I never thought every movie about WWII had to be about Jews being victims.

Just curious--Are you talking about the 1985 Soviet film based on the novel "Khatyn" by Ales Adamovich, about the Wehrmacht's 1941 invasion and occupation of Belarus'? If not, never mind.

A harrowing film. Mon dieu, what the Nazis did to Belarus'! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjIi...

Soviet film dramatizing the Khatyn massacre and a partisan's life before and after. No implication or cutaway - direct brutal realism. War is Hell and Hell has sunshine on misery.

Jewish girl from one of the Minsk ghettos during WW2. Installation at Khatyn memorial complex in Belarus. Breathtaking when seen in real life.

"Явка с повинной" от Z-военкора: Коц сравнил Донбасс, разрушенный армией РФ, с Хатынью
Один из наиболее известных российских пропагандистов признал, что действия армии РФ привели к тотальному разрушению украинских городов и сел Донбасса и оставили десятки тысяч людей без жилья.

And in post-USSR even after 1990s there was no reckoning. Chechens were allowed to return in 1957. Crimean Tatars - in the 1990s. There was a bit of talk about Vlasovs/Cossacs in the context of church revival in the 1990s, but it still felt a taboo. Khatyn was still not mentioned in school textbooks

Immediately reminded me of haunting memorial statue @ Khatyn in Belarus, where Nazis closed 143 from a village in a barn & set it afire in 1943, shooting anyone who tried to escape. An adult & 2 kids survived. Statue is of the man, Joseph Kaminsky, and his son. Our college choir visited in 1979.

I am actually surprised they have not invented anti-Bucha already.
Soviets managed to create 'fake Katyn' exploting German crimes in Belarus Khatyn and I only expect something similar or worse from modern Russia.

The #KhatynMassacre in #Belarus was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1943, when mostly #Ukrainian collaborators in #SchutzmannschaftBattalion118, with help from the #SSSonderbataillonDirlewanger, killed nearly all the 157 inhabitants of the small village #Khatyn, many of them burnt alive.

There is, alas, more than one. I'm referring to this, which is what Klimov was recreating. (This story is (was?) extremely famous in the USSR when I grew up in the 1980s. Everyone would have recognized this is what Klimov was referencing.)
