1,000 hours of work by a woman whose job was literally: computer. That was how you'd measure how much computing you were doing.

The original computers (workers who performed mathematical calculations) were overwhelmingly women. The introduction of electronic computers even spawned the term kilogirl (a measurement of computing power equivalent to 1000 girls). Programming those early electronic computers was also women's work.

maybe I'm being obtuse here, but I really get hung up on labor equivalence measures like this: it's a little bit horsepower, a little bit energy slave, a little bit man-hour, a little bit kilogirl (the computing output equivalent of 1000 women)

To answer my own question about 1940s gender ratios, the unit of (human) computing was called a "kilogirl". So there you go - almost all of them were women.
